| knjshk's Full Review: Capitol Reef National Park |
Good news for someone who like to study or/and see fossils and geology! I went to Capital Reef National Park last month for my geology field trip. I have been to many National Parks since I moved to Utah such as Zions National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, and so on.
I went to Capital Reef for my class, so I was busy taking notes, and listening to the lecture. However, rocks were still beautiful to fascinate all my classmates, and even the bus driver. The bus driver brought his camera with him, and followed us to listen to the lecture with us. (He was standing away from us, but close enough to hear it.)
We stopped at several points that we could see geological materials. Even though I visited many national parks before, I had never thought stones were made thousands and millions of years ago.
Near the visitor center, we could see a tree which changed to like stone because it was in the soil for a long, long time. It was one of the fossils that we could see from millions of years ago. I still cannot imagine that west side of Utah was on the ocean, so we could find shale fossil and sedimentary layers to prove it. We could not take anything from national park even just a small stone, but by the park, there was a place that we could get some fossils for memory. It was fun to find good shape fossils and valuable fossils. We competed to see who had good, valuable fossil there.
One of my favorite points was called goose neck. Fremont River was a river which made sharp, deep canyon and winding flow to make like goose neck. Deepest layer was settled millions of years ago. We saw it from top of the cliff, and could see some different colors of layers from there.
There were many ripple marks, and small holes in the rocks which showed soft structures moved out from there to make cool shapes. We could see lines on the stones too. You can find them easily even you do not have any idea about geologic structures.
Coolest point that I thought was just beside the road. There was no parking place, and it was located near the visitor center (around ten minutes away from there). From the bus, we walked ten minutes along white bottom of the precipice. When we arrived to destination, my instructor pointed to something.
It was a dinosaur bone!
It was my first time to see it beside in museum or in the classroom. Dinosaur bone was coming out from the precipice. Half of it was still in the precipice, so we could not tell exact size, but I could say that it was bigger than human bones. I was so impressed to see and touch it.
There was no place to ear or/and buy some snacks or meals. I think its fun to make lunch box before hiking or even just drive, so I was fine with it.
If you do not know anything, donft worry! If you go to visitor center, there was video, model of national park, and person that you can ask questions. There were several restrooms, and picnic area, camping ground was located in the park too. When you have a chance, you should go to Capital Reef National Park and enjoy nature, and old materials that are cool to see.
