Pros: It will play all DVD medias (except one DVD-RW that might be defective).
Cons: No progressive scan. No optical output. No composite video.
The Bottom Line: This player will solve the frustration of switching between DVD players to find one that will play your homemade DVD. It will play them all very nicely

| ejunkie1958's Full Review: Apex Digital AD-1110W DVD Player |
For someone who already has 3 DVD players (a Pioneer, 2 Panasonics), you might think it's odd that I just got this little DVD player. The funny thing about my situation was that I did not get it because it's cheap (under $50) but because I need a DVD that plays everything I have and plays them without skipping and stopping.
MY PROBLEMS WITH THE EXISTING DVD PLAYERS.
Like you I use the DVD players to play DVD movies and home movies I made using the computers (on DVD-R and DVD-RW). I also use them to play mp3 music that I burn on CD-R discs.
My Pioneer DVD player was one of the early ones that cost me $500 a few years back. This thing can only play about 90% of the movies DVD that I rent. This has got to the level of being unacceptable. It will only play CD-RW and DVD-RW but won't recognize CD-R and DVD-R.
My two Panasonics are relatively new. They can play all of the rented DVD movies. However, one Panasonic player can play my home movies on DVD-R but the other one cannot. Neither will play my movies on DVD-RW. Both will play mp3 music on my CD-Rs quite happily. With the DVD-R media, the Panasonic that plays it does it very poorly. It often freezes the video for a second before moving on. The effect drives me mad.
THE SOLUTION.
I started to ask my friends regarding my problems and almost all of them seemed to have the same problems with DVD-R and DVD-RW medias. One friend recommends me getting an APEX DVD player (he bought model 1200) claiming that it got rid of that annoying problem.
I could not find a 1200 model in stock so I settled for the AD-1110W. It is exactly what I had hoped it would do...it plays EVERYTHING I have perfectly. No stopping, no hesitation. The video quality is very good. I'm quite happy with it. I would not mind paying $200 for it. For being under $50, it is a steal.
SOME TECHNICAL DETAILS
SIZE: It is a compact unit roughly 10"x10"x2" (W/D/H).
REMOTE: Yes it comes with a remote, even though it says nothing about a remote on the box. The remote is small and quite odd looking but it is quite functional.
CONNECTION:
For audio, it has an RCA pair (red/white). It also has a digital output (Raw Dolby Digital bitstream or PCM (48kHz and 44.1 kHz)). I'm happy with this digital output since my older Entech Digital to Analog Converter that I use to get better sound can only understand 48/44.1 KHz. What this means is that this unit does not use the latest 24 bit, 192kHz DAC that my Panasonic DVD players use (you get better sound). There is no optical output.
For video, it has an RCA video output jack and an S-video output. It does not have composite video outputs.
FEATURES:
Besides playing DVD's -- I had one instant that it did not play a DVD-RW. I will confirm whether this is a defective disc since my computer does not recognize either -- the unit will play compact discs (CD): regular music CD, CD-R that contains mp3 or WMA files. It will also generate slide shows for Kodak Picture CD or just any CD-R with jpeg pictures in it. While viewing you can zoom in in 3 different zoom levels, rotate the pictures and specify different transitional effects...cool stuff.
The player is sophisticated enough to allow you to play tracks repeatedly per song or per chapter, play in random order or you can program songs in the order of your choosing.
While viewing a movie, you can zoom in the picture in 3 different zoom levels without losing sound or continuity (movies continue to play). None of my other DVDs can do that.
