I'll start out by making one thing clear. Do not buy this unless you are looking for something to dump your entire CD collection onto. It is far too expensive and heavy to be used as a casual mp3 player. However, if you're looking for something of that nature, this is the greatest thing on Earth! It is extremely easy to use with a unique scroll wheel that works great and a good layout of the button controls. It has a whopping ten gigabytes of storage space! That's in the range to some laptop computers, although they usually have twenty or more. I find that all this space is quite unnecessary, I could load my entire CD collection and all of the other songs that I "legally acquired" from KaZaA, and the iPod would be less than half-full! It is true that my CD collection isn't that large, but that's still a lot of songs.
Another reason that I dislike the iPod is that it has lost track of the whole point of mp3 players, being able to take your music with you in a very mobile, lightweight form. They were not designed for storage, that's what computers are for, and Apple seems to not know this as they keep on turning out larger and larger capacity iPods. I mean, 30 gigabytes!?, who has that much music? You could go a week without listening to a new track, except that you would need to charge the battery a million times.
The durability of the iPod isn't to much of an issue, it is plenty durable and doesn't just stop working like some mp3 players, although I have dropped a few times and it seems like it's about to break, it has been acting funny every now and then.
Anyway, I think you get the point, buy the iPod if what you want is basically an external hard drive. If they made an iPod that was in the 128 MB to 2 gig range, and it was a lot cheaper, I would be first in line to buy it.
I would recommend a smaller, cheaper mp3 player such as the RipFlash Plus 128MB
P.S.: I got this as a present from my mom, who is obsessed with macs, so I'm not sure exactly what she paid for it.
