| ibacon's Full Review: Apple iPod 3rd Generation White (15 GB) MP3 Player |
As a major Mac fan going back many years I can't explain why I avoided the iPod for so long. I've tried several brands but finally I saw the light and went out and purchased the iPod. After over 20 years of nothing but positive experience with Apple products it seems like a natural choice, but then I've never been all that natural.
The first thing I noticed was how solid it feels. It radiates "well built". The next was how clean it is. No clutter, no cutsey design accoutrements, just well designed, pure functionality. It's very compact at about 1/2" thick it fits nicely in the pocket.
Songs upload with lightning speed via firewire. Once I'd got a bunch of my favorite's loaded up I started listening. I don't care much for the "ear-bud" headphones, I find them somewhat uncomfortable but the sound quality is without a doubt, the best I've heard in an mp3 player. The controls are very intuitive and I easily figured it out without having to refer to the manual at all. All the controls are touch sensitive rather than mechanical which should translate into longer life and definitely does translate in to greater ease of operation once you get the hang of what's what.
There is also a plethora of aftermarket add-ons such as speech recorders, FM transmitters, cases, skins, speaker systems and on and on so your options are almost limitless.
The iTunes software is the perfect complement to the iPod. You can create song lists which are automaticallly updated every time you plug the iPod in. Playback options are more than adequate with the ability to choose from any playlist you've created along with shuffle, repeat, pause, skip forward, skip back, skim, etc. Menu options include custom eq settings, timer, sleep, alarm, backlight. I don't know what else one might want.
The iPod has other capabilities such as games, notepad and other stuff I don't care about so I'll leave it to others to comment on these features. The feature I do care about is mp3 playback and for this the iPod has no peers. Top drawer!
There's not much to say in the negative department. Battery life isn't quite as good as claimed, I'm getting about 6 hours but I fiddle with it a lot. I'd prefer replacable batteries so I could carry spares but I presume that would cost in size. The ear-buds are uncomfortable. You'll definitely want to get some sort of case or skin for the iPod as the screen scratches very easily.
