Pros: Works well enough, for about a year
Cons: Breaks right after a year, after warranty expires, and loses a year's worth of data
The Bottom Line: Don't buy this, or any other Maxtor product. It is unreliable and stops working. Warranty is too short. You will undoubtedly lose your data you have preciously stored.

| badfishckl's Full Review: Seagate Personal Storage 5000LE 80 GB USB 2.0 Hard... |
I bought this hard drive less than 2 years ago. It worked well enough for about a year, the length of the product warranty. However, after a year, the hard drive started malfunctioning. When I called in to see what Maxtor could do about it, they told me that my warranty had expired, and there was nothing they could do. Basically, all my information I had stored away on my hard drive for the past year was lost, and irrecoverable, outside of a very costly recovery possibility, which I could not afford.
Then the service agent helped me reformat my hard drive, and I discovered that it had been formatted in the FAT32 format, which is unstable with hard drives larger than 40GB. This drive was 80GB! How stupid can they be? Why would the HD come already formatted in the unstable formatting version straight from the factory? Anyway, I then formatted it to the NTFS file system, which is supposedly more stable.
I then started to use the HD once again, and I figured that there would be no more problems now that I had formatted it to the stable filesystem.
Guess what? It has been another 6 months, and now the hard drive does not work anymore. When I try to connect the hard drive to my computer, it is recognized by the system, but I can't navigate the HD. I just keep getting I/O errors, and it is basically no better than a paperweight now. Now, all my information I have saved in the past six months is once again gone.
What is the point of an external hard drive if it is going to stop working and cause you to lose your data every couple months? I would never use another maxtor hard drive, ever, not even if I was given one for free. If your data is worth anything to you, do NOT buy a Maxtor hard drive. I'm in the market for another HD and am staying very far away from Maxtor products. If this review helps even 1 person decide not to buy a Maxtor product, I will be happy.
DO NOT BUY A MAXTOR HARD DRIVE!!!
