| amylctyler's Full Review: Cosco Juvenile Protek 22291 Booster Car Seat - Cli... |
We purchased 2 of these car seats for my 3 1/2 year old daughter who is 38" tall and weighs 34 pounds. The seats are for her grandparent's cars. Our daughter has been very happy riding around in her 2 Britax Roundabouts we have in each of our cars. I have been very hesitant to put her in a booster at all, much preferring the 5 point safety of her Britax. However, she was nearing the 40" height limit on her Britax, and the top of her head was over the back of her car seat. I researched purchasing a larger seat to keep her in 5 point. Few choices were available, they were very expensive (Britax Husky $240.00) and her pediatrician said she was tall enough and weighed enough to graduate into a booster.
Before shopping, I first checked the Consumer Reports website. They allow you to view their carseat rating for free at www.consumerreports.org. The Protek was the Consumer Reports Best Buy. It is important to note Consumer Reports does their own crash tests, and this seat was rated Excellent. Fit to vehicle was Very Good and Ease of use was Good. I don't agree with their ease of use rating. Anyone who has installed a infant or toddler seat (with beads of sweat dripping down their back, tugging on the seat belt or latch belt) will surely agree that plopping a booster on the seat and feeding the belt straps is simple. Assembly was done in minutes with a screw driver to connect the back piece to the base (which can be used alone as a backless booster) and a few more minutes to attach the removable and washable seat cover. We put the seat in the car and had our daughter sit in it and buckled her in. I pulled the seat belt taunt across her hips and easily adjusted the height adjustment one click up to align her seat belt properly.
Appearance: Plain (drab) gray, soft and durable looking fabric, with a cup and snack holder on the left. Instructions are clearly printed on the plastic pieces on the outside, making it easy for the grandparent's to refer to even when the child is in the seat. Padding is soft. Some seats are actually hard! This is not as hard as others I have seen, but I would not call it plush.
Assembly and Instructions: Clear and simple, we had it assembled and took a drive in 20 minutes, and I read all the instructions
Comfort (What does my daughter think): She is proud of her big girl seat. She said it was soft and asked if the "wings" were for taking naps. She did not complain when in it. I was concerned, because the seat is not padded as much as her Britax. She moved the shoulder belt one time, but after correction, she has not moved it again. She is mature enough to understand the importance of her seat belt and her safely.
Overall: How can you beat it? - Excellent crash test rating for a tiny $34.99 price tag? We purchased this at K-Mart, which was the only store in my area to carry it in their stock. Walmart and Target did not carry it although I did see it in the on line stores at Walmart.com and Taget.com. This seat will be used in the grandparent's cars. For our cars, my husband and I may look at the Britax seats to compare, but we feel confident this is the right seat for the frequency of use it will receive.
