| surferdude7's Full Review: Pioneer DV-354 DVD Player |
The Pioneer DV 354 is a single DVD player made to play one DVD at a time. This slim line beauty will play DVD-Video, DVD-R & DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-R & CD-RW, Video CD and MP3 files. This player uses twin laser pickups for best quality.
~~ Features ~~
Technical Features
The Pioneer DV 354 has a 192 KHz/24-bit audio D/A converter for great sound quality. It can playback 96 KHz/24-bit linear PCM audio through the digital outputs.
For video it has a 10 bit/27MHz video D/A converter with Viter-Bi error correction to provide clarity on slow motion and still video.
MP3
The Pioneer DV 354 lets you playback MP3 files from CDs using the ISO 9660 format including CDR and CDRW discs.
It will recognize up to 250 tracks or folders that will let you Search for a certain song, Repeat a song, folder or even the whole CD. You can also put it on Random Play and it will randomly pick songs for you and you can Program up to 24 songs in any order you wish.
Photos
This DVD player will let you view photos from a Fujicolor CD or Kodak Picture CD format from a CDR or CDRW disc with up to 999 photos on a disc.
It has a browser that lets you view 9 thumbnails at a time and you can rotate images, zoom in on them and even set up a slide show.
Not sure about a Fujicolor CD but I take a Kodak Picture CD and copy all information in a directory to my hard drive and go to pictures and delete all pictures. Next I copy and paste my digital photos into the picture directory and burn me a CD from that directory with all information on it. This works great with the only problem being it will not show them in the thumbnail view but the full view is beautiful.
Sound
The DV 354 has TruSurround by SRS, which produces a deep three-dimensional sound from a pair of stereo speakers if you do not have a Dolby 5.1 sound system.
For Dolby 5.1 sound they use a Dynamic Range Compression for better sound quality.
Outputs
The player has an optical output, (Fiber Optic) digital coaxial output for Dolby 5.1 audio and a pair of RCA outputs for stereo audio.
For video they provide an RCA out for fair video, for better video there is an S-Video and for the best video connection they have a Component Video which consists of three different leads.
The Remote
The remote is a simple to use and understand remote. The layout is simple made for the DVD player only, it is not a universal remote. It is light gray in color with the buttons being a darker gray and the power button being orange.
Today with so many remotes that are universal and some options wont work when you try to use them on everything, I prefer my DVD remote to be used for the DVD only. I think a good universal remote should be on a TV or Receiver and not all the add-ons.
Standard Features
The Pioneer DV 354 has the usual features found on all DVD players today, you can Freeze a frame, view it Frame by Frame and Zoom in at 2x or 4x.
You have Slow Motion Playback in forward and backward modes at different speeds and a Resume Play that starts the movie back where you stopped it even if the power is turned off as long as the tray isnt opened.
You can Search for a title or chapter, Repeat a title or chapter and have a Random playback if you wish like on a concert DVD.
There is also a Parental Lock Function, Audio & Subtitle Language and a Multi-Angle Display.
Overall
It is DTS and Digital Dolby 5.1 ready but you do need a receiver with the built-in decoders to use these features.
Overall picture quality is good, the photo CD part works well producing a good image on my Mitsubishi 73 inch TV.
The audio through my Harman Kardon AVR 325 Receiver produces an excellent sound quality in a 7.1 sound system for both Digital Dolby and DTS movies.
