After extensive research on every DVD on the market, I chose the Sony 670 because it's a top-end DVD player with DDigital AND DTS decoders built in, which very few players have. Why DTS is important: Dolby Digital is the current standard for surround sound compression, but once you hear DTS on a GOOD system, it's not even close. Dolby Dig is 19:1 compression, while DTS is 3:1, which makes it much closer to reality when watching movies and especially when listening to new surround sound recordings (Steely Dan's new one as an example). If you have a good surround system, insist on DTS - there is a difference.
Spec-wise, I've got an analog NAD receiver that's 5.1 ready, so it was vital to find a player with a decoder built in. Almost every one now has Dolby Digital, but NOT DTS. The Sony matches up well with my system, as I've got PSB speakers all around. The remote also runs any Sony TV out of the box, which was a plus.
Feature-wise, the remote is easy to use (and the keys glow in the dark) for jogging FF and REW. It's got a joystick-like control that works in addition to the "to do" buttons. The unit is wide (hold 5 dvd's or cd's) and seems to put out nice cd sound as well. Menus are easy to navigate once you get the hang of them - any new User Interface takes a short time to get used to.
Problems: The only issue I've had with the unit is when DVD's are playing, you can clearly hear the disk spinning. If you have a door on your stereo unit, it's not a problem. When I leave the door to my TV unit open, I can notice the sound (from 6 feet away). Kind of annoying. Everything else functions as promised.
You should buy this DVD if you have a 5.1 ready analog receiver and want a DVD player that will keep up with technology (DTS) for the next 3-5 years. I paid $449 at Circuit City, which was roughly $150-200 more than a comparable unit WITHOUT DTS. But you pay for the advanced technology, and so far I've heard 2 DTS disks (American Beauty and Gladiator) and the sound quality is NOTICEABLY different. Much more realistic, a cleaner re-creation.
Good overall unit at a mid-end price.
