| Saxguy's Full Review: LG GSA-4163BB DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner |
My external CD burner stopped working a month and a half ago. That was a cause for concern, as this time of year, I am heavily into promotion of my band to park districts, festivals, etc. for the following summer. My demo CDs, actually CDRoms, figure prominently into that promotion blitz, and I burn them myself.
While my Dell Dimension has a DVD and CD burner internal, I've always found it easier to have an external unit, in case i wanted to do direct copying from one drive to another.
So, I needed a new unit and time was of the essence. I wanted a dependable unit, with good features and software and a good price. Upon review of my favorite sites: buy.com, newegg, ewiz and a few others, I identified several potential units.
This unit has the most (17) and highest (average 4*s) product ranking. I liked the fact that the bundled software was Nero OEM, since I had success with the earlier Nero that came with the earlier external burner. I actually liked Nero Express for my needs better than the newer full version of Roxio, which was very complicated and didn't seem to want to burn an audio and data CD. This unit also had a sale and a $15 rebate that weekend. So, I snapped it up.
The list price was $88 and they had a weekend sale for $63.99, with a $15 mail in vendor rebate. Shipping cost about 7.
The item came right away. I installed the software, which included Power DVD as well as the Nero Express. The unit itself was very easily detected by windows, once I plugged it in with the included USB2 cable.
Since then I have burned dozens of demo CDRoms, hence the double figures comment, with no coasters (failed CDs) whatsoever. That's never happened before. Not with the internal drives, not with the previous drive.
The Nero OEM software is easier to use than the earlier version and works for audio CDS, data CDS, both, and DVDs as well.
It's worked fast (48x speed) and dependably in doing something I desperately need for my musical career. It's also done a great job of burning audio CDs for my students - I make background audio CDs for them to play with/over. Copying one CD to another has worked equally well.
It has a one year return warranty.
This unit really delivers and I can recommend it highly.
