| Margaret1220's Full Review: Dell A920 InkJet Printer |
We purchased the Dell Dimension 4600 with the Printer, but because the Printer put our account over by $10, Dell canceled the Printer without notifying us. My daughters were in desperate need for a printer for school projects and we did not have time to re-order the printer from Dell.
So off to WalMart we go and purchase the Lexmark X1150 for $79.00. Five days later UPS delivers a Printer from Dell, which was the A920 for $89.00, plus shipping. These two printers are identical except for the name PrinTrio on the Lexmark model. The Dell model just has the Dell logo en-circled on the top of the printer.
This is the Printer/Copier/Scanner and it is actually made by Lexmark for Dell. The cartridges that Dell says you have to order from them can be purchased at WalMart, each a few dollars cheaper and you do not have to pay shipping/ handling fees. The same for the Printer which as I stated is $10 cheaper at Walmart, plus you save on shipping and handling. Each unit came with a set of Black and Color cartridges and a pack of photo paper.
The multi operational printer is cheap, the parts are mostly plastic, fairly durable. You cannot slam, or force these parts to operate or they will break. When Printing in color, this process is much slower. Scanning and Copying is slow, but if your out to save money and you are not going to print a large amount this machine is ideal.
I use it to print photos, which come out slow, but are fairly clear and colors show. The pictures are not very grainy. My children use the Printer the most for school projects and are able to perform their tasks with minimal problems. Either due to the computer or the printer, you sometimes have to hit print twice and for some reason which has yet to be corrected the Printer does not respond to Print in the Word Perfect Program.
Our Computer crashed about two months ago due to viruses and I just restored the operations and programs, so we are now up and running. I have yet to find out why the Printer does not acknowledge the Print command from Word Perfect.
Before owning the Dell Dimension 4600, we had a Gateway System we purchased in 1998, we had the cheaper Epson Printer which even with broken trays, this Printer was worked to death for six (6) years, it cost $129.00. It was still operational, but for $129 for six years, we threw it in the garbage. If I can say the same thing about the LexmarkX1150/Dell A920, (we purchased both) in six years, the money spent was well worth it.
The Epson was just a printer and so we purchased the Visioneer Paperport 3100 for $79.00, which we used two times. Having two separate units, compare to one unit with multiple functions, we use the multi-function machine way more. And six years ago we paid $129.00 for the Printer and $79.00 for the Scanner/Copier. Even with shipping and handling we saved $36, buying two multi-functional units.
Now we have only had the unit from Dell and Lexmark since March 2004, only time will tell just how much we really saved.
The ink cartridges are about the same in price $29 for Color and $19 for Black. We have purchased one cartridge of each in approximately six months. Our computer was down for almost two months.
I have never used an expensive model multi-functional machine, but if I had the money I would definitely buy the top of the line Epson. Which I believe is approximately $400 or $500. The more expensive models print out about 10-20 copies per minute. The colors are bright, and the photos look almost like the originals your have processed at a film lab.
