| robin1b's Full Review: eMachines T2042 PC Desktop |
As a computer novice (took some classes on internal computer parts in college) but by no means a computer expert I decided on purchasing an Emachines. I was not sure I wanted this at first. I always hear, "you get what you pay for", but honestly I didn't have $1000 to spend on a computer. With me in college and a second grader who wanted to play games I didn't need the fastest processor just a good computer that was fast enough for DSL and a couple games for my son. I am not a "gamer" so I wasn't worried that the processor was a Celeron as opposed to a Pentium. I checked out Dell and HP and couple others. Then I heard a testimony. A co-worker bought an EMachines and was very happy. I decided to go check it out. I priced it and got specks from Best Buy.com. As you can see from Epinions the specs were great. Everything was pretty much the same as the pricier brands.
So I bought it for $499. I already had a monitor and the only problem I had when I first came was the monitor was old and I needed to call Emachines to show me how to change the resolution in Safe Mode. (Something that Best Buy could not figure out for the $99 extra warranty.:-( ) The customer service was very helpful at EMachines. Only problem was the number is not toll free. I wasn't kept on hold for long and the rep was very nice.
Got the computer hooked up. The huge direction sheet and color coding they give is very helpful. Windows XP is a little different from the Windows98 I was used to but after a bit I have accepted it. I have used the CD burner to burn Cd's and it works fine. The DVD works fine. The speakers however are not great and you may want to upgrade. The mouse stopped working after a while as did my friends mouse, but a mouse is very cheap. The keyboard is standard but works fine. It has many ports and expansion slots and an ethernet which was great when installing DSL or a cable modem. My DSL is very fast and I don't get freeze-ups at all. It came with a free 90 day trial of Mcafee which was great.
I have had my EMachines for almost a year and have not had one problem minus the mouse. For the amount of money I paid I think it's a great deal. A computer expert may want more ram and a faster processor but for family use I think it's great. My son plays games and I surf the net and write papers. I will get new speakers but other than that it's great. It's a great computer that can easily be upgraded. If you want to spend more money you can but I don't think it's worth it.
