Cons: Compact flash write speed could be improved.
Eyecup clips tend to break.
The Bottom Line: An excellent prosumer SLR camera that I'd whole heartedly recommend if you're considering joining the digital revolution on the Canon side.
cepler's Full Review: Canon EOS-10D Digital Camera
I had owned various SLR's in the past, most recently a Nikon N90s. Moving from film to digital was a dream for someone that is very interested in the web and digital media. The ability to move your pictures from camera to family instantly is very nice! Instant feedback with an SLR camera allows you to experiment and get creative without worrying about film costs and development, let alone the lab messing up your prints!
The Canon 10D is a Prosumer camera with a very rugged metal frame. While it may lack the lightning speed of it's bigger cousins (1D, 1D Mk 2), it's still in the "affordable" category for most people and still gives quite good performance for anything but fast action shots. The overall feel of the camera is very solid, an improvement over the previous D30 and D60 models which (While still very capable cameras!) were based on a plastic frame which didn't feel quite as substantial as the magnesium chassis the 10D is built on.
Overall I've been extremely happy with my 10D for the past year and a half. As a technogeek, I am still drooling at the 1D Mk 2, but at 4x the price, it's hard to justify. The 10D hit a very nice sweet spot in price/performance when it was released and I believe it continues to be an excellent performer. The prices on the 10D are dropping, many prices are hitting near the $1000 mark NEW ($1155 or so) which may indicate that a new revision is coming out. If you're not one that HAS to have the latest/greatest, you might want to wait a little bit to see when that one comes out and how the prices drop on the 10D.
When purchasing a CF card (There is NONE included!) don't waste your money on ultrafast cards, this camera will not take advantage of them and you'll be wasting your money. I believe that a 32x card should be a very capable card for this camera. For some information on CF cards and information on how they perform in this camera, see these URLs:
If you purchase it, don't look back. Yes, there will constantly be new models coming out and you'll wish you'd waited to get the "new" model, but don't think that way. If you keep waiting you'll never get a camera, jump in, use your camera and enjoy it!
