Pros: Cheap. Reliable. Many on used market.
Cons: Limited expandibility. 256 meg ram max. Only two pci slots.
The Bottom Line: If you are a tech tinkerer and like to put together pcs for non tech people out of spare parts, Pentium 2s, 3s and Celerons make great first pcs.

I've used a number of old Emachines etowers. They range from the 400 to 533. I am typing this on a revived 400. The video on the mobo went out from not working to sporadic to dead again. An old generic pci video card fixed that. This thing is like a cat. It has at least nine lives. I've seen more "powerful" machines die from rough treatment, but this baby keeps on going.
I've killed my share of pcs while tinkering usually with something unknowling like hitting the power button one time too many. This thing bounces back from anything. Freezing, crash. Whatever. I've had Windows ME, XP, and 98se on this baby and it has done well under all of them. A friend needed a really basic operational pc which could do simple tasks like webbrowsing and emailing. I had at least 3 emachines lying around this one being the most convenient to access became the chosen one. lol.
Upgraded it to 256 megs ram. Put Windows and it runs fine.

After AVG free, Adaware and Spybot on it, and the necessary updates, it was up and working fine.
Dated, but give me a usb port, ethernet card, and cd rom drive and I can do things with it!
Only real weak points is maximum ram is 256 megs and only 2 pci slots. This thing has some isa slots which I wish were pci but hey, it was part of that generation of pc.
You can get one on the street or on Craig's list for a song.
Any generic Pentium 2/3/Celeron pc will do for any pre Vista version of Windows as long as there is enough ram.
This is one of the better cheap old pcs. For senior citizens and childrens, makes a great first pc.
