| pengshi's Full Review: Fujitsu LIFEBOOK P5020D (FPCM20206) PC Notebook |
Whats with the new notebooks? Manufacturers are making them bigger and bigger. Have you seen the new HP Media Edition laptop? That thing is gigantic. Thats why it took me a long time to find this computer. Dont get me wrong, you can still find small laptops, but they are in general more expensive and lackluster in performance. I have been using Toshiba all my life, so I looked at their Protégé, but most of the model doesnt even come with a CD/DVD-ROM. I never considered Sony because I used a Sony computer before and, boy, did it suck. So purely by chance, I came upon Fujitsu.
I got this computer for about a month now. All I can say is I love it. I have always used Toshiba laptop, so switching to a Fujitsu was a big deal for me. This computer turns out to be a great investment. It is not as expensive as comparable sized laptops (Sony). It offers the fastest CD burning speed in similar laptops. It will definitely turn some heads when you use it. It also has a long battery life (I watch 3 VCD movies on my international flight).
There is built in wi-fi that can be turned on or off using a switch next to the speaker. It offers two expansion slots, two USB 2.0 connection, one fire wire connection, and S-video port to connect to a TV. What are missing are your traditional plugs like RGB cable, and parallel cable. However, this laptop is designed for portability, so it would be hard to fit all that on such a small computer. The keyboard is smaller than a normal laptop keyboard. What takes some getting used to are the squashed > and ? keys. It was a little frustrating at first (especially when you are typing in domain names), but I got used to it after about 10 minutes. Its a small price to pay for portability. The computer comes a DVD/CD-RW drive, but you can pull that drive out and change to a 10 hour battery.
The screen on this laptop is wonderful. It is covered with dark glass, so touching the screen wont cause the ripple effect you get on a normal laptop. The screen is very bright, great for watching DVDs. There is a small problem with the design. Under bright exterior lighting, the reflection of the glass screen makes it hard to read. It is especially hard when you are on long battery mode, since the screen isnt as bright as when you are plugged into a power supply. This is a problem common on all laptops, so dont let this discourage you from buying this laptop.
The laptop has decent computing power. Dont expect to make 3D animation on this thing, but you should have no problem using the most common software. I usually use Microsoft Office, Flash MX, Adobe Photoshop, watch DVD/VCD, and surf the internet with this computer. It is especially handy to transfer photos from my digital camera when Im traveling, since there is a built in SD memory card slot.
The best thing about this laptop is the size. It has a 10 inch screen. The size is about as big as a normal 8 X 11 paper. This means the text on the screen is also very small (although you can adjust that in Windows XP, it is not easy to do, especially for people who are not familiar with it). One thing I dont like is the screen resolution. The graphics card that comes with the laptop only supports 1280 X 728. You can change to 800 X 600 or 1280 X 1024 resolution, but the screen will look stretched.
In conclusion, I think this is a very stylish, light, compact, and capable computer. If you are looking for portability, then this is definitely the computer for you.
