Pros: Small, lightweight, easy to understand functions, decent speakers and bass boost.
Cons: A tad "cheap"(flimsy), doesn't play what it's supposed to more than half the time.
The Bottom Line: I wouldn't wish this on any soul. The frustration you encounter trying to get it to play a simple CD-R is unbearable.

| k_lumsden13's Full Review: GPX C988 Radio/Cassette/CD Boombox |
Back in the Spring, I bought a smaller GPX boombox that I found on clearance for my 4 year old son. It was completely frustrating because it had a REALLY hard time reading the CD-R's I'd burned for him. So when my husband bought THIS boombox for work and then decided it wasn't loud enough, we decided to keep it around as a replacement for the first one, hoping we'd have better results. We haven't. 95% of the time, it won't read CD-R's, CD-RW's OR Mp3's. Every once in a while, if I'm lucky, I can get it to play one of these cd's, but usually (especially with freshly burned cd's) it just sits there and spins...trying VERY hard to read the cd. I usually have to wait at least 5 minutes before it tells me "No Disc". As far as sound goes, it's very good considering it's such a small thing, and the bass boost is decent. It's a frontloading cd player, meaning the door is on the front of the unit and you place the cd vertically in the player. This hasn't been too much of a problem, but the door is a tad flimsy and I've been worried about it getting busted off. It doesn't have problems reading normal cd's or playing tapes but this isn't really what we spent the extra money for. If we wanted one that would only play normal cd's and tapes, we could've spent $20 to $30 dollars LESS. So if you're just looking for a boombox to play tapes or listen to the radio, I'd suggest spending the same amount for a better brand that doesn't have the Mp3 feature. I would suggest avoiding this particular boombox. Maybe GPX should spend a little extra energy trying to make sure their radio's actually work. Like I said, this is the second one we've owned and been disappointed with. Buyer beware.
