Pros: Easy to see screens, full complement of features, great reception.
Cons: Expensive add on maps needed to achieve full functionality, uncomfortable ergo form factor.
The Bottom Line: This is a great GPSr, especially if you have some experience with GPSing and are looking to upgrade. Might be overkill for a first unit??
royr20410's Full Review: Garmin GPS 76 Handheld GPS Receiver
I've been using GPSr's for about 10 years and this is a recent upgrade from a Garmin 12CX. I bought this on eBay (second hand) for $325.00. I have been using this for a few weeks and am very happy with it. The electronic compass is great for slow movement and / or pinpointing geocaches!
The unit is loaded with handy and usable features, easy to access menus and gets great reception.
I like the external antennae connection. That's a plus in the car or on a plane. The reception is much better in dense tree cover than I have ever experienced with earlier units. I'm getting about 20 hours on a set of 2 AA batteries and that is very acceptable to me.
I can't say enough about the clear, high res, easy to see screen. As a 48 year old guy with glasses, this screen has really impressed me. Great visibility in sunlight and at night.
Cons; I can't believe Garmin did not offer an option to categorize waypoints. With the option to store 1000 waypoints, scrolling through the screens just does not make sense.
The unit is a bit wide even for my hand. I have not dropped it yet, but it's a bit unwieldy to hold, compared with the 12CX or a cell phone.
I think the price of street maps & topo maps is way too high. Microsoft Streets and Trips (does not upload to this unit) sells for 20.00 in Costco. City Select, from Garmin sells for about $130.00 and is not as detailed or intuitive as the MS product.
The manual is adequate for introducing basic GPS operation, but does not come close to explaining most of the features and extra menus of the unit.
