crossroads's Full Review: Gibson Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar
The Les Paul 58' Standard Vintage Original Specification Series of guitars from Gibson are the company's attempt at re-creating the cherished LP's of the late 50's and in my opinion; I don't think they could have done a better job.
Gibson pulled out all of the stops for the production of these guitars.
From the aged, aluminum stopbar tailpiece and ABR-1 bridge to the beautiful washed cherry, plain maple top to the 50's rounded neck and smaller headstock with holly veneer to the Kluson style tuners with green keystone tuning pegs and flattop capstands as well as the CTS pots and "bumble-bee" capacitors for the electronics. This guitar looks every bit the part of and plays like a well cared-for original 58 Standard plain top.
This LP plays so effortlessly that it's unbelievable. The action is low but without even a hint of fret buzz or loss of sustain which, by the way, seems to go on forever. Barre chords are not a problem anywhere on the neck.
The tone is something you just have to hear but then if you have heard the intro and solo of Led Zepplin's "Heart Breaker" (and who hasn't?) then you know where I am coming from.
The clean tones ring like brass wind chimes and the overdriven tones have a growl that I have never really been able to get from my other later LP's. The non-potted Burstbucker's 1 & 2 are perfect for this model; you would swear they are original PAF's. The balance between the bridge and neck pickups is superb.
You don't have to hit the strings hard to get this beast to growl, even with warm overdrive amp settings, just a lite attack will bring out the smooth,tight,complex,harmonic-rich roar that the vintage 58's and 59's are known for. With higher, gained-out settings your now in Slash territory. The tone is so unlike any other LP I have played that it gives me chills. If you want tone with a serious attitude; then look no further.
This is the tone that I have always heard in my head and on my old Beano, Cream and Free albums but could never achieve it for myself. After 25+ years of trying; I had all but given up hope until I purchased this 58 Standard. I HAVE found the Holy Grail of tone at last and with it's already played-in feel you can go from store to stage in the same day.
One other thing; this guitar REALLY responds accordingly to differently voiced amp types so you want to make sure that you run it through a good amp to get the most out of it.
Also, included is a sweet custom case with the same "horseshoe" clasp locks as the 50's originals. Mine has a black exterior and a beautiful dark, royal purple velvet interior lining and shroud along with the C.O.A, warranty registration card and care kit.
