mysteryonion's Full Review: Hewlett Packard iPAQ hX4700 Pocket PC
First I use to carry a NEWTON, so my view is a little skewed.
Screen is the first good feature and at even the smallest allowed font it is clean. The included cover is a nice items although it started to get a little loose and comes off sometimes. Left handed is not a problem for me, but right handed the hindge is in my palm and so it could cause me to drop it. The metal body is very good and solid, it should at that price. The touch pad is nice although not always predictable, but the buttons to the sides that access the quick features are too easily damaged since that section is much like a big plastic sticker. The included docking is handy and solid too. The sync software is not very advance and often annoying if you prefer to disconnect its link to your cpu and still let it sit there to charge. Feature and programs are very Microsoft... this is the skewed part. Frequent resets will be required. I would say much of the included programs don't go far enough to making things quick and having a drag and drop tool bar would be better than the OEM setup. Third part software could help. Using MP3 through the mini Windows Media is not smooth, but functional. SD and CF memory card use is handy. IPAQ Holster is nice. WiFi signal is good and does pick up the funny strength signal around me, not be for 802.11b. Battery...expensive. Writing recognition is...well...slow and a joke some times. Newton 2100 was more accurate...yes I'm one of the few that liked the Newton handwriting feature. Battery life was very good for most days and I usually no less than 38% left by the end of the day. That is based on opening it to do notes and calenar more than dozen times a day at about twenty word notes and less than ten dates recorded. Also, 20 minutes of WiFi and all three alarms running each day, 10 minutes of Jawbreaker on the way home with MP3 running.
