girlflesh's Full Review: Inside Wants Out [EP] by John Mayer (Adult Alterna...
As a big fan of his sophomore album "Room for Squares", and recently "Heavier Things", I had to go back and get "Inside wants out", John Mayer's 8-track debut album.
You can't deny this boy's got talent - for singing, writing and playing guitar. If you've already heard his later work, you might enjoy this album. Although songs like "Back to you", "No Such Thing", "Neon" and "My Stupid Mouth" appeared on "Room For Squares", they are not heavily produced on this album, and overall, the songs are slower, sadder, more touching.
It might feel like he's lacking energy on this album compared to the other ones, but I like his quieter side because this is the perfect album to relax to on a rainy day, or before sleeping. Very calming.
His lyrics don't knock me off my feet with brilliants, but a few lines do. In general, it's sweet and genuine.
1. Back to you: Comparable to the "Room for Squares" version. Decent 9/10
2. No Such Thing: I like this version better! Softly sung, and not perfectly polished. perfect. 10/10
3. My Stupid Mouth: Well, this track is still good, but I do the the "Room for Squares" better. 8/10
4. Neon: you gotta give him credit for the guitar playing here. There's a lot of energy because it feels like he's playing in your room, trying to screw it up. 7/10
5. Victoria: Does he say 'Victoria' or 'Tori' in this? Who cares, it's a nice track 8/10.
6. Love Soon: One of my absolute faves, about being in love, but having her deny the relationship. Pretty catchy. 10/10
7. Comfortable: The sweetest song on this album, about his love for an ex-girlfriend that he got on with so well, and now dating someone phony. 9/10
8. Quiet: I almost fell asleep to this song in bed, not cos it was boring, but it's so nice, but I had to wait till the end to turn off my CD player.
I say get this album if you're already a fan of John Mayer. If you're not, I'm undecided as to whether you'll like this. It's not studio polished, more like a guy with a guitar in a quiet coffee house sound. Check out his other albums. "Room for Squares" is my fave, and this guy is worth a listen anyhow.
Overall, I do like this album. I like the fact that there are "flaws" in the songs, like his voice is not perfect, but his sweet croons and loose guitar playing gives it charm.
