The Bottom Line: STAY AWAY from the Kenmore elite series dryers unless you want to experience the same faulty electronics as others here have mentioned.

I too purchased this dryer in 2002 and have recently experienced the same symptoms as everyone else... dryer only stays on when start button is depressed. I luckily found a NIB (new in box) even heat electronic control assembly (part # 8546229) from a company on ebay. I purchased this assembly for $49.99 and paid $3 for 2 day shipping. Installed the part in less than 5 minutes and the dryer is working fine again. After talking with the gentleman on the phone from Atlanta Wholesale Online (I think his name was Charlie), he told me he can hardly keep this part in stock it is so popular. So bottom line is I feel good about fixing this problem for a mere $53 when it would have cost me more than that just for the service guy to ring my doorbell.
Sad thing is... I used to work for Sears back in college selling appliances. I know first hand how much of a rip off the maintenance agreements are and in my story above, I would have been just outside the 3 year period even if I had purchased a MA. This problem should be recalled NO QUESTION ABOUT IT !! It is a shame that honest consumers who have come to trust the products that Sears sells have to go through stuff like this. I'm sure the average consumer will not know how to repair this and end up spending upwards of $200 (or half the price of the dryer) in order for their dryer to work properly.
