delt145's Full Review: Apple PowerBook G4 17 in. (M8793LL/A) Mac Notebook
This is my first mac ever and after using it for over a month, I can say without a shadow of a doubt I will not be going back to windows. When I received it, I couldn't to try it out. I opened the box and the first level has the instruction booklet, all the connector cables and the ac adapter, along with a dvd-r from apple. The next level is the computer itself, and I still dream about the first time I laid eyes on it. Once I covered the initial startup procedures in the booklet, I powered up the powerbook and after only a few minutes, was done with registration and was loading up the programs I bought such as office and keynote. I have been a windows user all my life and I live with guy who has a really high performance dell desktop pc that he spent 5,000 dollars on, and my laptop outperforms his desktop.
I'm really surprised at how easy it is to use a mac. I was worried at first, but I haven't even had to look at the manuel besides the startup procedures. The casing is absolutely beautiful, along with the screen. I feel bad trying to describe it,because I just don't feel I'm doing it justice, if only my tounge were more elegant , so that I could fully capture the beauty of this machine. As for battery life, it appears to run at the approximate time apple gave, as long as you don't use taxing programs. But I usually leave mine on my desk with the AC adapter plugged in. As for the backlit keyboard, it is great, it comes up immediatley, and varies depending on the light sources, with varying levels of brightness. One thing I didn't expect was to absolutely fall in love with this keyboard. It is without a doubt the best keyboard I have ever typed on, laptop or desktop. I'm actually eager for my professors to assign me long papers, so I can spend extra quality time typing on this beautiful machine. As for speed, I have the RAM maxed at 1GB, and I haven't seen it's speed dented by anything yet. No freezes, or crashes. I'm the first in my family to have a mac, and from the looks of the interest I've sparked, I won't be the last. Both my brother and mother love this machine and want to try apple computers for themselves, and my family was a strict windows family till I received my 17 inch powerbook. When it comes to the heat of the notebook, it really isn't too bad, it's actually just warm, not even hot. Most times I don't even notice it, except when it is cold outside, in which case it is a welcome feature. As for a comparison for plain speed, I really don't know what could beat this machine, laptop vs. laptop, except for a dual processor power mac, or an extremely modified desktop pc. No pc laptop need apply to challenge this behemoth, it can't even match its specs, no need for trying to match its performance. As I said, it is a great computer, even if it is pricey. But for me it is money well spent, and I haven't thought twice about the money. The way I look at it is, to have the best laptop on the planet, you have to pay a premium. And don't doubt that this is the best laptop on the planet, I don't see how they could improve it, unless they gave it away for free.
