ericwcha's Full Review: Legend of Zelda: Four Swords for GameCube
This game is amazing... I do not even know quite where and how to begin, but here goes:
Visuals
This game is really nothing special in the visual department. It is a top down view (exactly the same as Zelda for the snes game.) However, this game is not about fancy smancy graphics, but more on gameplay.
Story
Zelda gets kidnapped by an evil wind sorcerer named Vaati. Link finds a sword and it splits him into four separate beings.
Gameplay
This section is going to be rather long. The game itself is very linear. This Zelda has done away with the huge overworld where you can freely roam around. Each stage is locked by a spell that can only be broken by your sword if you collect enough force gems (described below)
In single player mode, you actually control all 4 Links (green, red, blue, and purple) The Links can be formed into 4 different formations a cross , a vertical line |, a horizontal line - and a box []. The regular formation is where the other 3 Links follow the main Link (the green one) around. You are also capable of controlling one Link at a time by pressing the select button (and thus selecting through the different Links).
Anyone familiar with the Zelda series is well aware that Link is capable of carrying many weapons and items. Is that true for this game? Yes and No. Link does have many items to carry, boomerang, hammer, fire rod, etc, however, he can only carry one item at a time. So if Link already has a boomerang and wants to pick up a fire rod, he has to drop the boomerang in order to pick it up. As for the sword, you are to pick up force gems. The gems are the source for the four sword's power and the more you collect the more power the sword will have.
Link is able to grab, swim, roll, and many different attacks with his sword. They are spin attacks, jump attacks, hurricane spin attacks, and down thrust attack.
Spin Attack- Link does a 360 degree spin with his sword.
Jump attack- Link lunges forward with his sword
Hurricane Sword Attack- A longer spin attack that requires twice the time to charge up (also depends on number of force gems you collect)
Down Thrust Attack- During the side scroll, you can do a downward attack as you fall.
You can play the quest by yourself (where you would do the 4 formations) or with a friend. For multiplayer, 4 gbas are required. Basically, the main screen stays put, and all the dungeons and buildings are shown on the gba. If you don't have a gba, you can still play the quest mode by yourself. Basically, the game simulates a gba screen on the television whenever you still enter a building or dungeon.
The battle mode is simply a last man standing type of game. All the weapons are avail. Although this is great fun, it's not quite as fun as "accidentally" killing your friend.
Music
The music is your typical Zelda music. Nothing too spectacular.
Final Thoughs
This game has some serious replay value if you can get 4 friends and 4 GBAs in either the quest or battle mode. The quest mode is the funniest because you can accidentally knock your friend off the ledge and then collect all of his or her items. It's one of those games that has non-stop laughing. BUT, you need 4 GBAs. Unless your friends are huge video game fanatics or under the age of 15, this is probably unlikely. I suppose one could just buy 4 GBAs and leave it around just for this game (yes it's worth it.) I think this game will rank right up there with Mario Double Dash and Super Smash Brothers.
One last note, the game comes with a GBA/GCN connection link, so you will only need to get 3 more, and you do not need the zelda game for gameboy advance.
