Oh, yeah, that's a Timex. Well, Timex dosen't have anything on Lexar. I just HAVE to update this review because I am sooooooooooooooooo happy with this gadget - I have been working 20 hour days for the past couple of weeks, and traveling between islands. I have to have my work with me.
I put everything on my Lexar and stuffed it in the pocket of my motorcycle jacket for my ride to the airport. It survived being in a soggy jacket during a ride in the rain. Then it survived having heavy luggage dropped on it (albeit while in my jacket). Then it survived being dropped and kicked. Then it went into my jeans pocket with my keys for the trip home. It got sat on while trapped in wet jeans. It survived. When I got home, I wa so tired, I just tossed my jeans in the washer. Then I tossed them in the drier. Pulling the laundry out of the drier, something flipped out and skittered across the concrete floor. It was my Lexar!
Well, I just plugged it in to the computer. It survived.
OK. Back to the original review.
Ooooooh! I love it!
I provide conference services for some of my clients, and have to haul tons of materials and documentation about with me. Make that HAD to haul tons of materials and documentation with me. Now I can put most of it on my nifty little Lexar Jump Drive!
OK, so it took me longer than most to learn about these gadgets, but now that I have one, I am impressed. Remember, I'm from the days when we backed up on reel-to-reel. These little magic key fobs make life SO easy!
Even though I find them pretty pricy ($54/256mgb at Walmart for the first one. $34/512mgb for the others a year later) they are worth it.
I purchased my first Lexar because it was the cheapest jump drive in Walmart. I needed to archive my websites to an external storage medium, and the discs did not have enough capacity to do so easily.
The process was so simple, I wish I had known about these gadgets years ago! I just plugged in the Lexar and it did the rest. Occasionally my monitor prompted me to do something, which I did, and then I was set.
Storing files, transfering files, transporting files - so much easier now! I also made big brownie points with a client at a conference in China when I was able to run around collecting the texts of various delegates speeches on my Lexar and then just hand it to my client to download one "folder" to his laptop. That more than paid for the gadget right there!
My collection of Lexar Jump Dives has also been a "poor mans upgrade" to my laptop. Once top of the line, my laptop now draws pitying glances from the other conference attendees who could slip a half dozen of their sleek machines into the case mine fills. Its limited capacity is legendary. But it is a workhorse and has never let me down. By plugging in my Lexar and using that as a primary data drive, I am able to reserve the hard drive for programs, increasing the speed and functionality of my laptop. To get the equivalent increase in capacity put onboard would actually cost almost as much as purchasing a new laptop.
The Lexar is not as slim and "sexy" as the jump drives I have seen some of my collegues use, but it works well for me. The fat little rubberized sides are easy to grip, and it is thick enough I can pick it up comfortably. Rubberizing the cap would help, as it can be difficult to pull off. But it does not fall off in a pocket or purse.
People with space limitations on their hardware would find the Lexar difficult to use, as it is wider and thicker than some other brands. But it also seems more robust. Mine have been dropped, stepped on, bounced on concrete, and jumbled about in my carry-on and pockets and never had a problem. I have plenty of hardware space on both the desktop and the laptop, so it works for me.
I'm very happy with my collection of Lexar jump drives.
