pablothegreat's Full Review: Highlights for Children Magazine
Since my daughter's reading skills took off, I am very interested in magazines for her. Of course the excitement at getting mail addressed to her is a huge part of the draw! I have found magazines that I did not like for kids full of junk ads to magazines that I loved. When a friend gifted my daughter Highlights Magazine for kids, I wanted to choke her. Maybe I was thinking of another magazine but was it not Highlights Magazine for kids in every waiting room across the country filled with religious content??? I was shocked to discover that Highlights Magazine is not as I remembered or maybe I am confusing it with another! Actually if I were to write my own magazine for children, I would use the same format. Nothing objectionable or edgy, just good clean educational fun!!
What I like about this magazine for children:
Lots of games like finding hidden pictures, finding words hidden, a mystery photo guessing game, matching games, find the differences in two pictures, and more. Mom and Dad will get a moment's peace while kids do the games and puzzles in the magazine!
Good clean riddles and jokes for kids that are not corny.
Fun crafts to do.
Letters and poems from other children along with their pictures.
Fun stories for kids that teach good manners and values.
Also problem solving stories for common problems kids have in school and with friends.
Poems about seasons and animals.
Factual articles about animals, cultures, insects, and more.
Around 44 pages (including both sides of back cover which have content), it is long enough to keep a child busy!
No advertisements for junk foods, sugary cereals, Pop-tarts, new movies on DVD for kids, no high priced Wii or PS2 or whatever else electronic game is out at the moment ads, and no beauty product ads!
Goofus and Gallant is a short comic strip with two boys: one does the right thing and one does the wrong thing. I love this!
Drawing instructions for kids drawing animals and other things.
Questions by children are answered by staff.
Thicker pages so harder to rip for youngsters.
Beautiful pictures throughout in bright colors.
No religious content but lots of good clean fun, teaching good manners and good values....right from wrong.
What I do not like about this children's magazine:
Many of the pages seem cluttered like they are trying to do too many things on each page.
That this magazine does not get more attention!!
I was very surprised that I liked this magazine for my daughter! My first negative reaction was because I remembered a magazine filled with religious content and that is all. Highlights for children is fun, creative, and educational! Safe for your children and good for them!! One of my top picks for great magazines for children! Subscription cost is under $30 for a year, under $50 for 2 years, and under $70 for 3 years. Recommended for ages 4 and up possibly younger if a child helps with activities. Also older kids up to pre-teens like the activities and it keeps them busy in doctor offices everywhere. (Shhh! parents too!)
