The ETX60AT was given to me as a gift, and I don't want to look a gift telescope in the .... hmm. Well, on with the review.
Yes, it has good, clear optics. But I'm surprised that others have been able to see Saturn's rings and Jupiter's clouds with the standard 9mm eyepiece. I couldn't see these until I borrowed a friend's 4mm. Now I use the 4mm for detail, and the 25mm for a wider view. Disappointingly, I have to tweak the focus each time I switch between the two eyepieces.
Which brings me to focus. The focus knob is very difficult to turn. And if you're looking at something straight up in the sky (uh, like planets or stars?), it becomes very difficult to reach. And I even have long skinny fingers.
Can't I say anything nice? I love having the built-in computer. Being able to find objects by scrolling through a list of names, then automatically slew over to them -- really nice feature. But the nicest thing is having the motor do the work of keeping an object centered.
Enough with the niceties. Here's what really burns my butt: The standard tripod was included in the purchase, and before I even got outside with this thing, one of the brackets broke. I tried to glue it with J.B. Weld, which will fix anything. But not this cheap plastic junk. The glue was solid as ever, but the plastic broke in other places. Shortly after, the other two brackets broke. I wasn't able to return it, so I fixed it with screws -- a less than optimal solution.
