For 'top-of-the-line' it's not so great.

Pros: Good reception and transmission quality, all the standard features of a high-end FRS radio
Cons: Low quality construction, not water-proof, privacy codes are a joke.
The Bottom Line: Keep searching. Motorola can do better than this.

| pkkrusty's Full Review: Motorola Talkabout® T7400 (22 Channels) Two W... |
I bought these looking for quality, and in certain respects I got it. The clarity of transmission and reception is unmatched in any other FRS system I've used. This could be due to the longer antenna. The option to use GMRS with 1 W output is to be expected in a system this pricy, and so are many of the other options. Ringtones, vibrate alert, vox, privacy codes all can be found in other models.
Let me focus on the negatives, though. First and foremost, the unit is not waterproof. If I pay $100 for a pair of radios, they should be at least water resistant. The battery cover is hard plastic with no rubber gasket, and the front is far from seamless. Looks like a $30 radio in terms of construction. There is no lanyard hole anywhere on the radio, unless you want to risk using the belt clip. VOX capability is less than stellar.
Aside from those two big negatives, it's a decent radio. It does the job, and has 'weather bands' although I seriously doubt they are that useful. The battery life is good, although that is expected with 4 AAs. Aside from the better than average reception, nothing makes this product stand out.
If you're considering these keep searching. I am. There have got to be better models than this. Check out this FAQ on FRS and learn a bit more before purchasing. http://www.popularwireless.com/gmrsfaqa.html
