The first thing I thought when I saw the MPIO FL-100 256 mb Mp3 player was - "wow... shiny!". And that it is - the surface of the unit is literally a mirror.
I was pleased to see that it was even smaller than I thought it would be when I saw the pictures online. At first glance, it seemed to be a bit delicate. Not that I was planning on smashing it against my walls to test, but I'm sure that if I dropped it a couple times it might not last.
Nevertheless, the unit is sturdy enough to withstand your everyday bump and grind. I take it with me jogging, and have it packed away loosely in a backpack when I travel - no problems so far (I've had it for about 2 months or so).
As for the sound, it is crisp and clean, exactly what you should expect from an Mp3 player. The included headphones were surprisingly good - I might not have to buy a better pair. The sound from the FM stereo is surprisingly good as well. I don't listen to the radio much, but I think the quality is good enough for those who do. Good reception, very little static or interference.
The interface is slightly confusing when first used, but easy to get used to. There's basically one switch/nozzle that does most of the functions, and you have to press in slightly to switch between Mp3 selection and FM radio.
The MPIO FL-100 256mb is lightweight and easy to carry. What impressed me was it's long battery life - on one AAA battery. The manufacturer says that it can go 11 hours on 1 battery - and mine certainly did. Playback time can be an under-rated (dis)advantage - I've heard of Mp3 players before that have an average playback time of around 1 1/2 hours per battery (obviously these are much lower quality players however, your standard name-brands should be much better than that).
CONS: The MPIO FL-100 256mb is a bit delicate. There are more durable players out on the market, and if you think you might be a bit negligent with your electronics, then this may not be the best product for you.
As well, the belt strap is a bit awkward. It covers up the volume control - which is kind of odd.
---
I bought this unit at a small online retailer. I believe that there are quite a lot of retailers selling these, for various prices. I would check various coupons/discounts sites to see if you can find a coupon code for one of these retailers.
Overall, I would definitely recommend the MPIO FL-100 256 player to your average music listener. Hardcore music addicts or tech enthusiasts might want to look somewhere else, if they're looking for the "coolest" Mp3 player. Otherwise, it's fine, it does what it's supposed to, and it does it well.
