NHL 2001 is a great game for any NHL fan or hockey player. The graphics are exceptional, the game is easy to understand, the modes are interesting plus much more!
Big Hits
This is one of the greatest parts of NHL 2001. You can do these exceptional hits, unfortunately, you will get lots of penalties with this move. When you hit the Z button on the keyboard you will do all these totally awesome body checks. Checks from a cool hip check near the boards, to flying around 3 feet in the air and smashing them with your stick!! With this new feature it makes it a lot more fun to play, especially when you are playing with friends.
Momentum Meter
The momentum Meter in NHL 2001 is extremely important to look at when you are playing the game. It tells you the amount of momentum your team and the opposing team has. When it reaches the top of it's meter, that team will go extremely fast, no matter how tired they are. They will become better shooters and have a bigger hit with it at the top of the screen. But if it goes to the bottom beware, that team will become extremely sloppy. They will be slower, their hits weaker and their shot off. Some ways to get your Momentum Meter up is to score a goal, a big hit or win a fight.
Create Your Own Jersey, Team And Player
Like in NHL 2000, you can once again put your face into the game. With this you can make your player have your face and have the skills you want him/her to have. But that's not all you can do with NHL 2001. This time you can create your very own jersey to suit your very own team. NHL 2001 gives you plenty of samples that you can use to make the best jersey ever, they have some awesome graphics for your symbol with some neat jersey designs for the back of it. Once you are done making the jersey, you still need to do one more thing. You need to name your team, first you get to chose form one of the cities given to you by the game, then you type if your team name and your done! So now you have your very own team, jersey and your own player!
Teams
With NHL 2001 you can be any team you want to be! You can pick your favorite team out of the 30 teams in the NHL or the 20 countries! SO you'll never be stuck for choice.
Modes
There are four main modes when you enter the NHL 2001 lobby. With other game modes for each one. You can play the SEASON mode, where you play the full season ( or you can do half or just play every team once) and then the playoffs. Once the season is over you need to do a ROOKIE DRAFT and SIGN YOUR FREE AGENTS like in the real NHL. Or you can skip the season and go strait into the PLAYOFF mode, this is a easier way to win the Stanley Cup. There is also the TOURNAMENT mode, where you get to play in tournaments should as the Olympics. The final mode is the SHOOT OUT mode. That is what the name is, basically you have a shoot out. When you select one of the modes that you like, you now have to select how you want to pick the teams. You can
either use the real teams, do a Expansion Draft or a Fantasy Draft. To do the expansion draft you have to be Minnesota or Columbus and then build up your team like they had to. The Fantasy Draft is where you can be any team and you get to pick any player you want. This is always fun, but make sure to pick the players you really want before someone else takes them!
Graphics
Now to talk about the graphics in NHL 2001. They are exceptional, you can see the reactions in their faces when they score, and the faces actually look like the real players! These are definitely the best graphics I have seen in a sports game to date.
Speed
The speed of NHL 2001 is really fast. It may go a bit slower if you have a lot of programs on at once or if you don't have much space left on your hard drive. the game usually is very reliable and will not suddenly slow down on you. The slowest parts of the games are the replays ( which come at good times) and the beginning of the games when they walk out of the dressing rooms. So you might just want to skip them if you have seen them before (replays you cant have seen them before, but you know what I mean).
Compatible
NHL 2001 is compatible with many types of joysticks. When you first install it you'll no matter what have your keyboard connected, then if you want you can add more controllers. Such as a joystick or a wingman. In total you can have up to four people playing on one computer! Great for a party!!
Controls
The controls for NHL 2001 are really easy to get used to. And if you are having lots of problems with them, you can always change them to your liking. So you'll never be stuck. When you first start NHL 2001 the controls (on the keyboard) are all at the bottom of the board. There are many controls that you need to know though, you need to know what to do when you have the puck and when you don't or you'll be in trouble. So before you go and start playing, you might want to memorize the controls.
Internet
Like most EA. Sports games, you can play against people over the Internet. This is extremely fun. You get to meet new people and start great rivalries, or play against your friends then bug them at school when you beat them. All you have to do is make up a username then go into the lobby and challenge some players. You can also join an Online League over the Internet, I'm not sure what they are like since I have not yet entered one. But they sound like fun!
