tom1949's Full Review: Nikon Travelite V (8-24x25) Binocular
I have been conducting private investigations for over 20 years. All we do is surveillance. This of course demands quality equipment. I own several pairs of the high end Leica Binoculars, Canon Stabilizing Binoculars, and a host of expensive spotting scopes, cameras, etc. For the money and for our type of work, these Eagleview units are simply fantastic. They are not as bright as my $2,000 plus Leica binoculars but if you want a compact powerful set of binoculars for quick in/out subject zoom, this is it. Of course, you lose light as you zoom in but that is true with any type of optical device; even my $4,000 dollar surveillance camera loses light when we zoom in. Yes, it would be great if these binoculars had an optical stabilizing mechanism for zooming over 10x but then again, that would sky rocket the cost. And, it would be great if more light could be coached out of the optics, but then you would lose compactness. In our business, we need something small enough to cup our hands over as opposed to some massive ‘navy ship deck binoculars’.
Summary:
Excellent quality construction Twist eye cup adjustment is great for glasses Outstanding controls; i.e. focusing and zoom toggle are well placed Zoom is very smooth; no notches, just a graduated zoom Easy to cup the binoculars inside your hand for covert usage Eye relief is great; i.e. optical eye matching, and eye spacing Feels solid in your hand; better than my compact Leica Binoculars Great for getting long range license plates despite shake at high power
