| bflusche's Full Review: Panasonic SC-PM18 CD Shelf System |
We wanted a bookshelf system for our bedroom with multiple CD capability so we could load a few favorites and always have them ready.
We looked at several systems at the local store and found that many with the features we wanted looked like gaudy jukeboxes with neon orange trim. In contrast the PM-18 was smaller and elegant. It was a little more expensive, but was perfect for us.
It has all the basic features, AM/FM, CD, and cassette. It also has two RCA jacks for an aux input. There are 5 separate CD trays that slide out for loading. When switching from one tray to another, the mechanism is a little slow and noisy, but our system is inside a cabinet so we aren't bothered by the noise.
We are not audiophiles, to us the sound is excellent. There is no manual equalizer, but the unit has several different equalizer settings to tailor the music. We use the "Super EQ" setting and both C&W and hard rock sound good. While we tend to listen at moderate to quiet sound levels, you can crank up the volume to a painful level without distortion.
Since the unit is "Bi-amp", there are two sets of wires running to each speaker. They are color coded so you hook them up correctly, but the extra set of wires makes hook ups slightly more difficult.
There are minimal controls on the unit, the remote is required to program the system (ie selecting the AUX input requires the remote). Just what we are looking for, an inexpensive good sounding book shelf system for our bedroom.
