| se7endust's Full Review: Panasonic SL-SV550 Personal CD Player |
After spending 9 days in high school, I realized I had to find something to occupy my time during the class changes or during my home room. The answer was a simple CD player that I could use to blast my Nightwish mixes. I bought a cheap $30 Audiophile player that lasted nearly 2 years before I dropped it and had to have her replaced. I had bought the Best Buy 2 year replacement warranty so I received a $30 store credit towards a new CD player. With $30 more dollars of cash in my pocket, I had $60 to use on buying a new CD player.
The features I wanted was for it to have excellent skip protection (so I could make it through the class changes without disruption), long battery life (hey those AA batteries aren't cheap) and a radio so I could listen to my local talk show host (mancow) in the morning before school began. Most of the CD players were either nice Sonys for $129.99 or knock-off Audiophiles for $49.99. The next best one I found was the Panasonic SL-SV550 for the exact price I wanted.
The actual sound quality from the player is quite superb, something I would expect out of my home theater system. The headphone jack has an extra little pop to it which secures the headphone plug in place and makes sure the contacts are in place. I get no disturbance from the player and I love every note coming from it.
Now you must understand that this CD player is constantly in my pocket so I don't have to hold it like a loser while walking down the hallways. The great thing about my old Audiophile was that the play, stop, etc buttons were on the side of the player and I could easily reach the buttons in my pocket. But with the Panasonic 550, I have to stretch my pockets to hit the play buttons on the top, which can be very frustrating. This obviously isn't the fault of Panasonic, its my unusual use of the player that causes this Con.
The other problem with putting it in my pocket is the size of the CD player. Compared to my old Audiophile which was Ultra-Slim, this CD player is a beast. But thats what you pay for when you want excellent skip protection, and thats exactly what the 550 offers. I can shake this CD player up and down and left and right, and I hear the music undisturbed. I was quite impressed when I sprinted down the halls to make it to my class and I heard "She is my Sin" clear as a bell.
For a portable CD player radio, the Radio/Band feature works quite well. I get a decent signal as long as I'm in a classroom with a window. Although sometimes even being outside can cause poor reception with the radio.
The headphones that come with this player are cheap and not even worth 10 bucks. They were quickly replaced with some Sony MCR-G52's. The battery life on the 550 is great, I can last about 20 school days which consist of about an hour or 2 of music play. The display screen on the player is nothing special, it shows the battery life, the track number, and the track time.
