Pros: 10 GB's of storage, good sound quality
Cons: firmware upgrade impossible, usb driver installation faulty, skips, volume control embedded in menu, cheap headphones
The Bottom Line: I do not recommend this player to anyone who desires ease of set-up and use with quality, skip-free portability capabilities.

First I had a Archos 6000 for one day before I discovered after charging that it was defective (wouldn't boot). I returned it to Fry's, they said this was a common problem (wish I knew that when I was shopping initially). I came home with this one because it was on sale for same price as the 6000. It charged, booted, and even played the sample songs (or perhaps the songs the previous owner had copied before THEY returned it?).
Try as I might I could not get my PC to recognize the new drive, the USB driver would not install, and then trying to install the firmware upgrade from archos.com was a joke! I found in the read me section that I have to change the file from a .ajz to a .mod file, which I did and still it refused to work. In fact, I kept receiving an error message about "defective skins". Go figure.
So as any frustrated techie with a new toy would do, I gave in and called tech support on MY dime since they don't have a toll-free number. I was placed on hold for over 30 minutes and THEN-- I was transferred directly to the tech-support VOICE MAIL!!!!! Unbelievable.
I am taking this product back to Fry's, once again, and exchanging it for a more user-friendly product that actually has a lucid user manual with helpful instructions and existent tech-support should I require that. Although, I can't imagine that any other mp3 player could be MORE difficult to set-up and use than this one. Perhaps I'll get the Creative Nomad (I heard that you can actually take that one off your desk, you know-- it's PORTABLE).
