| wkpatton's Full Review: Samsung Yepp YP-700 (128 MB) MP3 Player |
I bought the YEPP to connect my www.emusic.com account with my pioneer car stereo system. Seemed like a perfect fit in that i would be able to pull down albums from emusic, dump them onto the YEPP then plug the YEPP into the stereo using the aux input (on the rear of the stereo) and then crank throught the radio drought regions of Vermont.
This has turned out to work really well - great sound quality, plenty of storage (with the addition of a 128mg smart media card) and cool tunes to go. From my standpoint there are cool features, and lame ones:
Cool
Battery life. With a fully charged battery and a new aaa (the yepp provided a recharchable battery that is internal, and this external holder thingy for a aaa battery) I get close to the advertised 20hr run time. For me this means i can run the thing in my car for a full week without having to worry about running out of power.
Remote controller
The YEPP has a full function remote that means i can keep the YEPP unit in my ashtray space, with only the remote hanging around - then i use this remote to control songs etc. Works really well.
Storage
with a smartmedia card (which i think is definitely the way to go with these things) i get about 4 hours of songs - enough to keep my commute fun for the week.
Recorder
The YEPP has a recording function that lets you use the thing like a dictaphone - cool. It is so small that you can use to to record secretly all kinds of stuff...
Cons
The YEPP puts out a low volume sound by default - to really crank it up you need to press the [ ] button on the side each time - since it always defaults back to a moderate volume. This is a pain - since in a car setting you are always having to turn it up.
Display
My display 'fogged' up in about 2 weeks - making it hard to read the quickly scrolling long name songs. The backlight makes it easy to read - but the light only stays on for a second - again making it hard to read long file names.
Teeny buttons
All the controls on the main body are really small - hard to operate normally - and impossible without gloves.
