| jvatt24's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-F200 Personal CD Player |
I got this cd player a couple of weeks ago because it looked like it would be perfect for me. Im happy to say that it has done a good job with just about everything I have thrown at it.
The Outside: On the outside, it looks just like a cd player should, with little extra things added. It is a fairly thin and small unit and doesnt weigh much at all. The buttons are well spaced out and are in the right place where they should be. The display is nothing special; it displays the track number and location in the song, if skip protection is on, bass boost, and play mode. The only complaint that I could have is the unsightly bubble type logo on top of the cover; I could have done without it very easily.
Sound: Again, there is nothing special about the sound quality. It is excellent, just like all other cd players. There is a bass boost for boosting the bass (duh!), which has 3 settings: off, level 1 or 2. I have found that the highest level makes the higher frequency sounds richer, as well as the bass, but it also gives the music a weird exaggerated quality to it, so I leave it at the 1st level. The volume is sufficient for most, although there are always going to be those people who have blown out their ears or have bad headphones. The headphone that come with the cd player are not worth keeping (I think), so I got some other better ones. There are annoying beeps whenever you press a button or have it paused, so I turned them off (thankfully), which was actually easier than you might expect. (In case you were wondering you have to remove all power supplies from the cd player then re-attach them holding down the stop button)
Radio: The radio part of the cd player is better than I thought it would be. I have gotten some good reception everywhere that I have tried on the FM band, but Im not too sure about the AM because I never listen to that (Im guessing that it too is ok). The radio is easy to use and set the presets, just a couple of buttons and youre on the station you want. It uses the same buttons as when playing a cd, so it removes the clutter of some other cd and radio players. In fact, there are only 7 buttons on the unit, plus the volume, hold, and open buttons.
Problems: I have had a few problems with this cd player, but none of them would make me want to return it. The biggest issue with it is when the skip protection is turned on, and I put in a cd with some low frequency sounds in it, it comes out distorted. I mean, totally garbage music that no one in their right mind would want to listen to. There is something wrong with the skip protection, because when I turn it pause it or stop the cd momentarily, then go back to listening to it, it becomes normal again. To fix this problem, I turned the protection off, but it still doesnt skip that much with it off, so it isnt too much of a hassle. There is no AC power adapter included, which would have been a nice addition, but luckily I already had one that works with it.
Anyone looking for a cd player with a radio that does its job consistently and well should definitely look at this one.
