lavoisier's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 2200 Printer
Since my family's printing requirements became a little more demanding and that expansion is becoming even more important, I decided to purchase a laser printer for that purpose. The thing is that with ink jet printers, if one or the individuals that print a lot of black and whites, including myself on school reports, assignments, essays and many more; it wouldn't be sufficient, because of the limited printing allowances with the inkjet printer as the parts and rollers are not as durable as the laser printers'. In addition, with the high ink costs for the ink jet printer, it just isn't viable to actually print so many pages of material and cost you quite a fortune and in a short time after you first used the ink cartridge, you have to replace it with a new one, especially for black and white documents. Laser printers on the other hand, use toners which have been used for a long period of time and this technology maybe old, but the toner cartridge can print a whole lot more compared to the ink jet printers for the same amount of money. That is why the laser printer is a wise investment for any setting, whether it's as humble as your home or as busy as your workplace.
But what to choose was kind of tricky too. It really all depends on your printing habits and how often will the printer be used. Well in my household, we do quite a bit of moderate volume printing in the network, not just for my schoolwork, it's also great for printing something like invoices, statements, receipts and many more. Because my household has a computer per person, we all operate the computers under a network. By that we share the same Internet connection, printer and some files too. With our demanding printing requirements, we chose the LaserJet 2200 by Hewlett Packard. Why HP? Well, because they have a proven track record in producing the finest Laser Printer products for almost 20 years now, it's that simple. I happen to choose the LaserJet 2200, because I feel that with the more complex printing applications that maybe required in the near future, I really wanted some extra room to expand. Later in the article, I'll be writing about the possible expansion options with this printer.
Performance
If you even ask, the performance of this laser printer is flawless for the family and I. I really believe that you?ll say that for your family too. The text really prints clearly without any jagged edges and I can really have confidence that my documents are as fresh as when they're first printed out of the printer. At a 1200dpi resolution, it aids in printing the text very finely and I don't even have to worry about the same thing when I have to print out diagrams or even some graphics.
With a printing speed of up to 19 pages per minute, I can really count on the printer to really complete a large printing job in not time at all, as the speed of the printer are really close to the advertised printing speeds. With 8MB of buffer inside the printer, I can even worry less on printer downtime and I can ensure that I have sufficient buffer to accept large printing jobs, especially if you're heavy on graphics at times like me. With room for an extra 64MB of memory (totaling to 72MB of memory) for future requirements, I can even be more assured that I'm really buying a product that can serve me faithfully for a long period of time, as my printing requirements become more demanding.
With the sheet capacity of 350 sheets (250 on primary tray and 100 on secondary tray), I can especially don't really have to worry too much on whether I run out of paper, despite my demanding printing requirements within my family. Besides, this printer is capable of accepting another paper tray for your future printing requirements. For the additional paper tray, there are 2 sizes that you can choose from depending on your future requirements with the printer; they include a 250-sheet tray and the 500-sheet tray. However as a precaution, I have to tell potential buyers here that the 500-sheet tray only accepts media up to letter sized or A4.
With a duty cycle of up to 40000 pages per month (it will dwindle downward after some years of use), I again have the same confidence that I can print a lot within one setting and that I don?t really have to regulate the use of the printer.
But the differences between the base and the 2200d units, is that the base product doesn't offer an integrated internal duplexer. The duplexer allows the user to print both sides of the page without manually having to flip over the pages during the process. However the LaserJet 2200 base printer cannot have the internal duplexer. So choose carefully before you actually buy here, as the duplexer is fixed in the 2200d and upward trims for the printer.
With the parallel interface, I can easily hook this printer into the print server, which is hooked on to my family's network, without the use of the network card accessory. But the network interface is optional for this printer if you do plan to use this printer in a larger networked setting. But for a family of four, with one computer for each family member, the parallel port will be more than sufficient. By the way, the printer is also USB compatible for you Mac users too.
However, I wished that HP would include an LCD reading on the status of the printer, as the LEDs that are provided on the printer is not really sufficient to really aid in troubleshooting the printer, once the printer encounters problems, such as unable to accept information and other complex problems that may arise with the printer.
After almost 4 months of use, I find that HP has done another fine job in their printers and I definitely will find it easy to recommend this printer to my friends if they plan to have a networked printer. No breakdowns whatsoever in just that 4 month period. But I would really think that the appropriate thing for the vendor to do is to increase that warranty to 3 years instead of just offering a one-year warranty, because this printer is chiefly used within a commercial setting.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this printer is suited for all environments, except for the corporate use. If you think laser printers are only for the office, think again with the HP LaserJet 2200. I definitely recommend this to even the most discriminating home users, especially now since many homes have their computers networked to share printers, Internet connection and many more.
