naphtalia's Full Review: Sabra Chocolate Orange Liqueur
Shortly after I moved to Israel, I discovered Sabra Chocolate Orange Liqueur. This is one of my favorite discoveries since arriving in the Middle East. The primary flavor of Sabra is a rich, bittersweetish chocolate. The dense chocolate is cut with the sweet and sour taste of oranges. This citrus addition gives Sabra a kick that plain-old chocolate (as wonderful as it is) just doesn't have.
Israel is famous for its citrus fruit, especially the Jaffa oranges which are the citrus compliment to the delicious chocolate taste here. Jaffa oranges are complex. They are sweet and tart at the same time. Sabra keeps this complexity.
Because I have only been in Israel a short time, I have not had much chance to experiment with Sabra. So far, I have tried it in hot chocolate (yum) and cold chocolate milk (OMG! so good!), with a little whole milk (good, but not great), by itself (mmmmm!), and drizzled on sponge cake that is then covered in raspberries (you gotta taste it to believe it!)
The Sabra bottle is reminiscent of a genie bottle in shape, which is appropriate because Sabra is magic. It seems best served either slightly chilled or slightly warmed. At room temperature, it loses something. Chilling seems to thicken the chocolate feel. Warming seems to bring out the citrus tones more.
I will continue to experiment with Sabra. If you are a chocoholic, or even just a chocolate fan, this is the drink for you.
