Must get HD (Reply to this comment)
by daperlman
Given the date of your review, you must have gotten one of the first 50" DLP's on your block. I hope you have flipped the HD switch by now.. HD content is where DLP devices really shine.

Has everything gotten expensive as well?
Yes.
I don't know when you left the Philippines but in 1989, a new Toyota Corolla (Assembled in Japan, 1.6 liter, 16 valves) cost P320,000.00; now, the new Corolla (assembled in Manila, also 1.6 liter, 16 valves) will cost you around P820,000.00 . Ridiculous.
I just test drove a slightly used mercedes earlier this evening (S320L, 2002 model), the asking price was P5M (roughly US$95,000.00) Brand new, in the US, this car is "only" around US$72,000.00, I believe. Pretty bad, huh?

Ya, but I'm in my 30's with no kids and no house payment. What else am I going to spend my money on (other than fine wine?)

Yup, I stand by my first reaction - that is admirable - I feel like such a lazy slob for wanting a TV more than wine. Oh well...
And egads, over 50 pesos for a dollar?! That's crazy! Has everything gotten expensive as well?

I did a couple of times but that was when the exchange rate was only P26:US$1 in the mid-90s, before the Asian crisis. Business was great, and, if one was careful, one just couldn't seem to miss on IPOs.
Now, at P53.70:US$1, I wouldn't, at this point, consider spending that amount on a bottle. These days I rarely spend over US$150 per bottle (as can be seen in my reviews). Extra special occasions (like my birthday, Christmas and New Year) merit US$200 to US$250 per bottle. Actually, just tried 3 good and very reasonably priced 1997 red Burgundies (averaging about US$32 per bottle). Nothing to crow about, but, for the price, well worth it.
Best,
N

25 bottles of decent wine? ONE bottle of Petrus?! Holy cow. Now that's admirable. (Would you really do that?!)
Megu, who last had wine at a Bar Mitzvah three years ago.

A Wega? What a funny name! Doesn't everything look better with a big TV?

Andrea, we had that same conversation forever. But we got a deal that was too good to pass up, and husband gave up his beat up Motoguzzi to help pay for it. And we justified it by admitting to ourselves that we were big couch potatoes.

Chris - I thought it would be an eyesore but our space is airy and it looks "normal" - it just makes everything else (dog, plants, furniture) look small. Maybe I could get a Great Dane?

Merry Christmas... (Reply to this comment)
by ermitano
..., megu. Never mind the tech info, half of us wouldn't understand it anyway.
Sounds like a great TV. Couldn't bring myself to buy one though, I'm not particular with television sets. The trusty old 32-inch Mitsubishi in my room will remain there until it dies. Besides, quick calculations show that US$3000 will buy me around 25 bottles of very decent wine...or 1 great vintage Petrus.
All the best for the holidays,
N

That's one whopper of a TV. We recently big the big TV bullet, and got a Sony Wega (not as big as this one, but big for us!) And we love it. Use yours in good health:)!
Happy Holidays!

... I am turning green. Green!
I'd kill for this. DH and I keep telling each other (alternately)
"When the price goes down."
"When our ship comes in."
Congrats on your new addition!
Andrea
whose 2 32" TVs add up to 64", you know

it might be super sleek and all that, but I would still struggle with a fifty incher in my face in the TV room!!
Although I remain unconvinced that this TV is for me (I have confidence that my 19 inch cheapo will let me watch the Queens speech adequately in a couple of days!), your review is as great as always!!
Just remember that size isn't everything.
Keep on keeping on
