| vze26v5x's Full Review: Samsung ML1740 Laser Printer |
I finally got around to buying a laser printer last January, about a year after my last inkjet finally died on me. I got the usual sale and rebate, so I paid $99 for the printer. It was easy to set up, although the paper tray is a little fiddly to load until you get used to it. The plastic trays feel a little flimsy, but since the printer just sits on my desk, it hasn't mattered yet. Also, when I use it, I think back to my first printer, a $300 black and white inkjet, and this one is miles better. It even prints decent grayscale.
I have since printed about 900 pages, and everything is working fine, and I haven't yet needed to replace the included toner cartridge.
The printer takes about 15 seconds to warm up, and goes on standby rather quickly, so it's not as fast as advertised when you're only printing a page or two at a time. However, when I'm printing 30 or 40 consecutive pages of text (12 point font, single or double spaced) at once, it only takes two or three seconds per page. I can queue a couple of PDF articles at once, and move on to something else with the computer while the printer stores the articles in its own memory.
Unlike the people who have had trouble with manual feed, I had no problem printing envelopes or labels with the printer. I haven't had the need to try card stock, but I suspect it would cause no more trouble than the labels (the weight is the same).
All in all, it's a great printer for the price, and I'm glad I bought it.
