| beachfrog1's Full Review: C-Technologies C-Pen 800C Handheld Scanner |
Trust me. I am so disappointed with this offering; I wasted $200.
Here is a brief background about the situation:
The model I own is a C-Pen 800. I am a part-time grad student and I am also employed full-time. Hence, I felt I could benefit from this product by scanning reading material and putting it together in a Word document. I have a new laptop, I also subscribe to a very established cell phone company, Verizon. I am relatively computer literate, I have a PDA that successfully synchronizes with my laptop. I consider myself as a reasonable and a rational thinker. Because of my experience with the C-Pen 800, I truly feel it is my obligation in goodwill to inform all consumers interested in buying this product. There are many reasons this product is worthless:
1) The OCR is very sensitive, it does a very poor job of scanning. Sometimes I am scanning to fast, or to slow, or pushing too hard, or not pushing hard enough, or the platform I am scanning on top of is inadequate.
2) I currently have a new 2003, IBM T-30 (the brand that sets the standard for the computer industry). For some reason, I am unable to C-Direct (synchronize) the information from the C-Pen to my laptop.
3) Because the unit is unable to perform a C-Direct, I desperately attempted to transfer files via e-mail. Guess what? In contrast to what the advertisements suggest, the C-Pen does NOT send e-mail. It merely yields an error message, invalid address.
4) My final option to transfer a file via cell phone. You guessed it, my C-Pen does NOT send info to my Verizon cell phone. Verizon is among the most popular cell phone companies
5) I e-mailed the U.S. distributor, their response indicated that they would not provide support unless I purchased it directly from them.
6) I called the home office in Sweden. I received an automated operator, speaking in the native Swiss language.
7) I joined a Yahoo groups club. I posed my troubles in form of questions, to the group. Nobody responded...I think they are all too busy trying to get their C-Pen to work.
8) Thinking there was probably something wrong with the C-Pen's compatibility to my laptop, I purchased a nearly obsolete $40 USB IR cable...yep, you guess it, it does not work either.
It is interesting that prior to the purchase, I read reviews online about C-Pen. They were good reviews...however, in hindsight, now I notice the reviews were written by people who reside in Europe. Therefore, either the C-Pen works better in Europe, or the contributors of reviews are employed by the C-Pen Corp.
Do not buy this product. I have never felt compelled to write a review for a product in my life - I would never put this much effort into a product review; however, this situation calls for it. Instead of purchasing the C-Pen 800, you are better off, taking $200 and betting on black on a roulette table, or paying someone to type for you.
