| timu59's Full Review: Sony Walkman MDS-S39 Mini Disc Player |
I have been an owner of SONY products for many years. With each product I find one major important quality: CONSISTENCY. Every product that I have purchased from SONY has been defect FREE!
My latest on the spur purchase is the new SONY MDX-D3. It combines a MINI-DISC player and recorder with a CD player in one unit. If that isn't convenience, then what is? One of the nice features of this unit is that you don't have to struggle with cables and connections for recording. The unit records directly off the CD. It has a nice and easy remote control so you may been able to program different recording sessions.
Another plus is that it has a fiber optic digital cable so you may connect another digital source for recording. For example I have that input hooked into my Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) recorder. So I can easily switch around with digital recording formats.
The only draw back is the SERIAL COPY MANAGEMENT (SCM). Which basically means that it will only allow you to make 1st generation digital copies. Which is pretty stupid, because you can turn around and make all the analog copies you want.
The unit cost me $289 which was a good deal. I have my 6 year old MDS-101 (one of the first MINI-DISC recorders) hooked to my SONY GX900-ES receiver. Another advantage of this unit is that it will dub a copy of a CD onto a MINI-DISC at 4X speed. So if you are borrowing a CD from a friend you can whip it out and record it in as little as 15 minutes.
The unit is not big or bulky, but just the right size to fit on a shelf, stand, or bookcase. The size gave me enough room to fit on the bottom of my bookcase.
I moved my giant SONY CDP-801ES to the console stereo in the living room. I have had that CD unit and my receiver for 5 years without a problem. The MINI-DISC seems to be catching on a lot better than in years past. I am waiting for a combination CD-RECORDER and MINI-DISC RECORDER unit to come out. When it does, you be sure that I will be one of the first to get one. For individuals that don't want to spend alot of money, this unit would be great with a receiver and speakers for a complete home stereo unit. I recommend this unit highly and hope that anyone looking for this type unit.
