Nice idea poorly executed

Pros: One unit, two formats
Cons: Very buggy, freezes alot.
The Bottom Line: I wouldn't recommend this for anyone because of the bugs in playback. Maddening.

I purchased three of these units thinking they would be a big help reducing the number of components in the house. It has good sounding specs: Progressive Scan, Component Out, Commercial Skip and DVD/VHS in one unit.
The clean lines and smallish remote make the original idea attractive. But the bugs make it less than desirable to own. What bugs you ask?
1) You can't access all menu items from the unit in DVD mode. You have to switch to DVD or switch to VHS depending on what you want to set up. Why can't you just set up the unit with one menu button?
2) The unit will not play all DVDs. I tried two new movies this weekend, the Davnici Code and Talladega Nights. Neither of them would play in any of the three of these units I have. Just says loading and then locks up. To make matters worse, you have to power the unit off to get the thing to eject the disc.
3) You can't dub right from DVD to VHS. It requires going out and through another source and back again. Fortunately my receiver allows this so I don't have to buy another VHS unit to accomplish this but then again who is recording DVDs onto VHS anyway.
4) No S Video for VHS.
5) Freezes all the time on standard, new DVDs when they switch layers.
After the two plus years of ownership I am greatly disappointed. I have seen a general decline in my acceptance of Sony. My PS2 and other Sony items just don't seem to have the quality of items from the past from the Sony brand.
