| lavoisier's Full Review: Yamaha YST-MS201 2 Speakers |
When I work at a local computer hardware store, I give my customers great advice for their solutions to their computer needs, particularly when I sit down with a customer, when it comes to buying a new computer or even upgrading their computer. But when it comes to computer speakers, the store that I work in also sells the Yamaha YSTMS201 speaker system, but with my experience in using the product in the back room of the computer store that I work at, I find that the product doesn't live well on the vendor's claims.
Installation and What comes with it?
The package comes with a subwoofer, 2 magnetically shielded satellites, along with an AC adapter and cables. The important thing about magnetic shielding in the satellites is that it safeguards the monitor. What it does is that the magnetic shielding prevents the monitor from discoloration and it gives you the flexibility to place the speakers closer to the monitor. For installation, it comes with an easy to follow manual, that will show you every step of the way to installing the speakers, through their diagrams. But as in most 2.1 speaker systems, installation should take no time at all and usually doesn't require reference to the manual. You just plug the active satellite and passive satellite to the subwoofer and the subwoofer into the green plug of your audio plug. Once this is done, plug the speakers to a power outlet and you're ready for audio experience.
Experience
Even though the speakers are bundled with the subwoofer, there was clearly insufficient bass to hear the effects of explosions. But the trebles are clear enough to compensate for the lame bass production. With each satellite producing 6 watts RMS of audio, it is clearly sufficient power to really dive into their digital audio collection. Plus, with the 18 watts RMS emitting out of the subwoofer, it may provide bass, even though I cranked it all the way up, it still didn't provide sufficient bass for my audio experience. As a result of the lack of bass, these speakers aren't really recommended for action movies, such as Independence Day, Die Hard or anything that has an explosion effect. Even though I tried to place the subwoofer close to the corner of the room, there's still the same problem that I've experienced before. Plus, with my audio collection that is present in my computer at the store that I work in, I really find that these speakers aren't really fit for audiophiles like me, with an MP3 collection of about 300 song titles.
But the nice thing is that the volume control know is large and easy to adjust, unlike many of those volume controllers that are on the satellites, which are too small and the ones on the remote control can be even worse, for those who have rather large hands, like me.
You don't have to buy these speakers just for computer use, as it is also useful for your portable audio players and it adds a tremendous amount of clear trebles into your audio experience. But you do know what I've just said about the bass, though as you'll be sacrificing the quality on bass.
Conclusion
For about $40, if you're looking for a speaker system to replace your old 2 piece system or to replace your old 2.1 speakers, I wouldnˇ¦t really recommend this set of speakers, as the bass is really lacking in these speakers and that many people are looking for a much better bass output for their speakers. If you are looking for better speakers for the same money, by all means, go for the Creative Inspire 2400 or the Altec Lansing AVS 300.
