| surferdude7's Full Review: Sunfire True Sub MK II Subwoofer Speaker |
The Sunfire True Subwoofer Mark II is an eleven-inch cube (11 inches wide by 11 inches deep by 11 inches in height.) and is powered by a 2700-watt amplifier with two 8" drivers, one on each side. This subwoofer may not be big but it weighs a hefty 48 pounds.
The Mark II input coupling is optical and it accepts standard and high-level inputs.
Frequency response is rated down to 18 Hz and up to 100 Hz, plus or minus 3 db, this is adjustable by a bass level knob in the back.
It has a second adjustable knob in the back for crossover variable from 35 Hz to 100 Hz with a slope of 36 dB per octave.
There is a third adjustable knob for input level control with continuously adjustable phase and a passive 70 Hz, 6 dB per octave hi-pass line level output for satellite loudspeakers.
About Sunfire
Bob Carver founded Sunfire Corporation in 1994. Bob also has two more companies Phase Linear and Carver Corporation. Bob is a mastermind when it comes to electronics and the new Sufire Corporation is more proof of that.
Sunfire is like all of Bob's projects, he targets the high-end audio industry, you won't see any of his products at Walmart, you will have to go to a specialty store on electronics.
Bob Carver claims to have the smallest, most powerful subwoofers that you can buy today. Right now they produce five different subwoofer models ranging in prices from $895 to $1995.
The Subwoofer
The subwoofer is used to get that deep bass sound, if you use a subwoofer with satellite speakers you will be able to tell how powerful a subwoofer can be. All you have to do is turn the subwoofer off and now you are hearing nothing but a high treble sound. Turn the subwoofer back on and you will appreciate the rich bass sound it produces.
To get a good bass sound you have to move a lot of air, which is measured in cubic inches. The more cubic inches the more bass sound it will produce. You need about 135 cubic inches of air to get your furniture, floor and walls vibrating. The Mark II has an air volume displacement of over 235 cubic inches. So this little baby will rock, rattle and roll.
A lot of bigger subwoofers won't even hit the 135 cubic inches of air displacement.
Where to Place a Subwoofer
Ok everyone has his or her own ideas of where to place a subwoofer.
First of all, you hide it, the subwoofer doesn't need to be seen. Place it somewhere so you will still be able to adjust the bass level with the knob on the back of the subwoofer. Older DVD movies will take more bass than then newer ones.
I recommend plugging it into a plug that is controlled by a switch, then you can turn it on or off by the flip of the switch. Though there is an auto on & off circuit, I still prefer a switch.
OK I personally like to put it between my couch and the wall, the subwoofer will shake you when you are sitting on the couch. It's like being there live!
I would not place it close to your TV, I tried that and it shook the TV too much.
My Final Words
I thought my 150-watt subwoofer was great and now my best friend had to buy the Sunfire True Subwoofer Mark II and invite me over. "I WANT ONE"
It comes with 2 years parts and labor warranty and my friend paid $1249 for it, with a list price of $1395. It is well worth the money when you compare it to other subwoofers that sound close and cost $3000 plus.
When playing DVD movies we had all three knobs in the middle section and the effects were unbelievable, when we cranked up the volume through the receiver, we had to turn the bass level down. It sound great with DVD movies and you can make it vibrate almost anything in the room if you turn up the bass level. We had on Days of Thunder and it was like the race cars were in the room with us.
When playing music off the CDs it was beautiful with the bass level a little past half way. The beat of the drums and the bass guitar sound was impressive. One CD that we played was Pink Floyds "Dark Side of the Moon" it sounded better than I could imagine.
This is truly a great subwoofer for the home theater system, I highly recommend the Sunfire True Subwoofer Mark II, another great job Bob Carver.
