jimbo2112's Full Review: Shure E2C Consumer Headphones
I bought these to replace the earphones from my 20Gb iPod. Standard iPod earphones are like sticking tea cups in your ears, rather painful to say the least.
I had read that the quality from Shure is good. The E2C being the least expensive in the range I thought they may fail to impress, but they really do have a great deal of detail and fine reproduction. They seem very sensitive to the most delicate sounds and I have figured out some of the lyrics that I have not been able to hear properly since I have first heard the track, e.g. a Crowded House song: "your skin is like water on a burning beach" and not "burning bridge" like I had always thought.
I managed to get the headphones for £65($125) discounted from £77($148) which is twice the price of the Sony version of `in ear` headphones. So I expected high quality, which I got. As we all know though, Hi-Fi works on the basis of diminishing returns so spending twice again to get the E3C's should only provide a similar hike in quality.
The only real problem I have with the E2C's is their lack of bass. I may consider retuning all my MP3's to have greater bass in them, but I am not sure if the headphones would just distort. This will not be an issue for you if you like classical or `non rock` based music. The best way to improve the bass, I have found, is to pinch the sponge and roll it before putting it deep into the ear (don't worry, it wont go too far!)
They come in a nice round case that you can store the various ear plugs in. I prefer the sponge ones as they distort to fit my ears better than the rubber ones. The level of external noise they block is fairly good when they are in with no music playing. When you have a track playing though, the outside world can do as they please, as I simply cannot hear them! This was great when I took a flight a week ago, I could not hear the plane engines despite being over the wings. Be warned though, when wearing them as a pedestrian you need to be extra vigilant!
