| hc_ca's Full Review: Dell UltraScan P990 19 inch CRT Monitor |
I use these P990 dressed up "Sony" monitors in the design lab at my school. Perfect for designers and gamers, or anyone looking for a high quality display.
My review of the Dell P990 19" CRT:
Design: 5/5
Square, Conservative, Well laid out! Every button is in a good location and the fit of all of the pieces is tight. They do not make this design anymore, so you might have to look on ebay to find one if you really want it.
Display quality: 4.5/5
When you first turn it on, you may notice how quiet it is compared to your old monitor. As it fires up, the monitor automatically degausses (or demagnetizes) itself, so you hear the low pitched "BOOM, buzzzz" for about a second or two.... completely normal, and sounds less harsh than my Gateway 17" CRT.
When the display has warmed up, the "ooo's and ahhh's" start coming from the mouth as you stare in amazement. The colors are VERY rich and the brightness is plentiful! The factory settings for brightness are set at "31", and at this setting, the screen is perfectly lit. There are also adjusts for color, screen dimension adjustment (trapezoid, pincushion, moiré, etc...etc..).
Clarity is also very well noted here! This is an aperture grill monitor rather than a shadow mask like most others. Aperture grill allows for sharper images and brighter displays than shadow mask. The text, either in the center or at a corner of the screen is crystal clear on this monitor.
Typical with Sony Trinitron tube monitors, the damper wires are present. Two to be exact, both about 33% from the top and bottom of the screen. Some people find these very annoying... I really don't care as the quality of the image makes up for the lines being present! They are visible, more so on a white screen, but easily forgettable if you try not to notice.
Durability: 5/5
Our school bought 70 of these monitors in June 2001 and they haven't had a single problem with ANY one of them thus far! You are buying a Sony product (although Dell puts their name on it), and Sony's are well known for reliability.
Quality: 5/5
I am truly amazed at how well everything functions! The buttons are of high quality, and feel precise. The casing is strong, and the stand, although a little flimsy, is very durable.
The monitor even sounds like its made well. As I said before, when you turn this thing on, it doesn't sounds like its going to fall apart.
