Not having too much to do while waiting around in the vicinity of Detroit Airport for a missed flight, I (and then we) had the opportunity to dine at Bob Evans Restaurant right next to our hotel. Bob Evans has been around for many years and is a popular restaurant chain in the Midwest. I had to have dinner one night alone. My waitress was very friendly and efficient. Perusing the menu, I noticed several dinner selections that looked tasty, such as Salmon Fillet, Grilled Chicken, Steak Monterey, Fishermen's Dinner or Crispy Chicken Strips. But I made my menu choice quickly deciding to choose a new item I spotted on the menu: the Slow Roasted Pork Loin dinner. Service was fast and I had my meal in no time. I thoroughly enjoyed this dinner. It cost just $7.99.
The portions are quite large, but more importantly, the food was really delicious. When Tom arrived, I told him we had to go there to try their pork dinner. I practically dragged him to Bob Evans Restaurant. We (again) ordered the slow roasted pork loin dinner I had just had a few nights before, but this time we split it because I knew the dinner was going to be large enough for both of us. Just like the time before, the mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. The baby carrots were cooked just right too, not over-cooked at all. There were two thick boneless pieces of pork (with flavorful gravy) which were also tender with no fat or gristle. You really could cut through them with a fork. We also had a homemade buttermilk biscuit with it. Tom liked it as much as I did. This time, since we were splitting our dinner, we'd ordered two pieces of pork loin, which cost $9.99.
We honestly wanted to try one of their yummy looking desserts too, but were just too full. The little table menu, tempted us because it was setting on the table. It showed treats such as Reese's peanut butter pie, fudge brownie sundaes, and fresh strawberry supreme pie.
We came back the next morning because Tom really had his heart set on trying one of their new breakfasts, which are called "Country Benedicts". The photos on the menu looked really appealing. We decided to share an order of the Country Benedict breakfast too. This breakfast consists of a buttermilk biscuit cut open. We chose the one that came with spinach, tomato and bacon. On top of that comes an egg on each side of the biscuit. We chose to have our eggs cooked over-easy. There is a nice sauce on top which I believe was hollandaise sauce. Our order came with home fries too. We were not disappointed at all and enjoyed our breakfast very much. The food here is basic and not fancy, but really does taste like good and hearty home cooking.
I remember eating Bob Evans Sausage in our home when I was growing up. Bob Evans is a familiar name, especially in the Midwest, where Bob Evans Farms got started. Founder, Bob Evans, began making sausage in 1948 on his southeastern Ohio farm. He first began serving his breakfasts at a small 12-stool diner he owned. From there things just grew to where they are today. There are almost 600 Bob Evans Restaurants located in 19 states, more or less in the Midwestern and eastern U.S. The restaurants are all company owned and operated. Compared with a meal we ate at a Cracker Barrel, I enjoyed Bob Evans more. I thought the food was better and the ambiance was as well.
The decor of this restaurant was definitely on the homey/cozy side. The exterior has a red roof and the name "Bob Evans" is spelled out in a cursive script. The parking lot was large and the landscaping attractive and neat. There were lots of booths to the left and the right of the large lobby. The restaurant was clean and did a lot of business, but even with all the hustle bustle, everything seemed tidy and in its place. The location was excellent too and probably contributed to this being such a busy place. Being situated exactly between two large hotels (Hampton Inn and the Ramada Inn) they got a lot of foot traffic at Bob Evans. There are also several other hotels within a mile or less of this restaurant.
Checkout the Bob Evans website, which also offers their recipes: http://www.bobevans.com. How cool is that?
They also offer take-out and are kid friendly.
