| Tholian's Full Review: Golden Corral |
I used to love the Golden Corral. When I was a "Fit for Life" style vegetarian, which meant I had to be careful about my food combining and always make sure to eat plenty of salad, Golden Corral was one of the few places I could eat on the road. I could choose from a variety of hot and cold foods that I could put together for a "properly combined meal."
I didn't mind paying full-price for the buffet even though I was not going to eat most of what was on it, because at least I could choose my own food and get as much of it as I wanted--that can be a real problem on a very restrictive diet, which would leave me only able to eat half of an $8.95 vegetarian plate due to the food-combining rules. So GC was a better value than a lot of places.
I've long since given up that diet, but GC held a special place in my heart for many a year, because it saved my butt so many times. Desperately scanning some remote Interstate for a place I could eat decently at, I'd see the GC sign and be flooded with relief.
I've gone to GC less and less in the past couple of years, and do not think I will ever be back. The last time I was there, in one of their new-ish Maryland outlets, the buffet was filthy with spilled food; the floor was dirty, also with spilled food and generally looked like it could use a good cleaning; my burger tasted of cheap grease and was so foul I couldn't eat more than a bite or two. I ended up filling up on the canned mac'n'cheese they always put out for the buffet. At least that would have a predictable quality to it.
They are going downhill fast, IMO.
