| bbbradk's Full Review: Old Country Buffet |
I've been an on and off regular for some time at the Old Country Buffet in Buffalo New York.
For the longest time I had no idea that it was anything but yet another Chinese Buffet (I suppose when I see the word buffet I just associate it with Chinese food?)
But one time while passing the restaurant, my girlfriend pointed out the sign on the window advertising some special and I was shocked to find that it was a meat and potatoes type of place.
We went in for a visit, and as far as buffets go, these guys were pretty good.
As you walk in, you join a line that leads to the cashier stand (depending on the time of day there may be no line, but count on one at noon and at six).
When you get to the front you pay for your meal (very reasonable, under $10.00 the last time we were there) and then go find yourself a seat.
The place is quite large, so we have never had a problem finding a seat.
Once you are settled, you'll probably want to go and get yourself a drink (unlike other buffets there are no waitresses, only folks who will take away your dishes)
Drinks are included in the cost of the buffet, and we always get our money's worth at the chocolate milk machine (there are also sodas, coffee and teas available).
Most times we will start with the salads and soups, pretty standard fare for a buffet.
Last time we were there they had a great macaroni sausage soup that was almost like a chili that tasted amazing.
After salads we head for the hot foods, now since they are constantly changing what is offered it would be impossible to describe it all, so I'll stick with some of my favorites.
Fried Chicken-Surprisingly good, very crisp with a really nice coating, plus since it is popular is always being replenished.
Macaroni and Cheese-a little on the mushy side, but if you can get the macaroni at the top of the pan, it's a little crispy from the oven.
Mashed potatoes-the perfect consistency, plus there is a giant vat of gravy right beside them.
A few other dishes I have seen on a regular basis on the hot table, Salisbury steak, breaded fish, green beans, roasted potatoes, potato chip casserole, carrots, turkey, stuffing, chicken pot pie, pork ribs, and tacos (as stated though, the menu is constantly being rotated)
As you may be guessing there is not a whole lot of what one would consider healthy food here, but everything in moderation right?
So after a plate of two of hot food, you are ready for dessert.
There is quite a selection of sweets too, everything from cakes and pies to hot peach cobbler and chocolate fudge cake, they even have an ice cream machine.
So while you definitely wont be sampling any gourmet dishes, you will certainly leave full.
Not a great place for dieters or even those who are choosy about their food being just so, but as long as you have a few plates you are for sure getting value for your money.
