Pros: A taste all their own in an atmosphere of wonderful odors.
Cons: Some of the locations have inadequate service due to staffing problems
The Bottom Line: Schlotzsky's attempt at a deli styled fast food makes for a great change of pace and a delicious lunch.

| bermudabum's Full Review: Schlotzsky's |
I became a big time Schlotzsky’s fan long before the chain became popular. In south Texas we used to stop in Corpus Christi on our way to Padre island to grab lunch. Lunch of course had to mean Schlotzsky's. The small south Texas town we lived in had 6 Pizza shops 4 burger joints, that is if you include Whataburger and even a sonic and 2 chicken joints. The selection was decent considering the town size but it also left a lot to be desired after having lived in San Diego where the selection was unlimited right in our little suburb.
Now that Schlotzsky's has open 6 branches in the area I live in, I can again stop in for the different taste their menu offers. I won't kid you and tell you that everyone will love their sandwiches for the prices they are asking but for those with a tongue that loves to be tickled by subtle flavors and unique textures you need to stop in.
Having originated with "The Original" their menu selection has broadened to include everything from healthy delicious salads, scrumptious soups to even their own sourdough crust pizza.
The chain has developed into a deli styled fast food chain. The crossover wasn't 100% successful due to their limited selections particularly in meat selection, but you can rest assured if you tried to steal my Muffuletta away that I would surely be disappointed and put up some resistance. Who knows if I were really hungry I might take a bite at your hand as you grabbed for it. :-)
I guess that is saying a lot in and of itself so let me get to some of their selections.
The Original- fashioned with layers of shaved ham and two types of salami, cheddar, mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses and then accented with onions, olives, lettuce and tomatoes the only appropriate standard condiment is mustard. Now you could have them add Mayo or like me have them leave off the Tomato but all in all this is their signature sandwich and is the one that always made us divert that few extra minutes even though we were missing the sand, waves and well babes since I was a teenager back then.
Original Variations- In addition to the original you can change up your original to any of the following with your selection of original toppings.
Deluxe Original- Bigger mounds of the stuff you want
Ham and Cheese- No Salami and more ham
Turkey Original- Turkey in place of the other meats- A healthy combination too I might add.
Cheese Original- Meat Free for those who go without meat.
The Turkey Bacon Club- Has substituted for my new favorite and includes smoked turkey and bacon served hot with melting cheddar and mozzarella (I substitute Provolone for the cheddar myself) served up on their delicious buns and includes lettuce, tomato and mayo.
The Italian- we ain’t talking the Mafia where you get cold turkey, we're talking Ham and Genoa salami with Monterey Jack cheese topped with lettuce, onion and tomato lightly covered with mustard, mayo and even some Italian dressing. Quite tasty if I do say so myself.
Chicken Cordon Bleu- includes a healthy portioned chicken breast with ham and melted Swiss and topped with mayo and a bit of Dijon styled mustard. Definitely not my favorite but I am weird I don't like Swiss, but hey sub the Swiss for provolone and its a great sandwich.
The Philly- Served on their regular bun it just ain’t the same as a nice foot-long with onions and bell pepper and dripping with cheese sauce but the sliced beef is quite tasty and does include a health serving of onions and peppers and even some mushrooms as well as mozzarella and cheddar cheeses.
The Roast Beef and Cheddar- The sandwich I prefer if I am grabbing dinner instead of lunch. Mounds of hot roast beef and covered in melted cheddar cheese this sandwich comes with lettuce, tomato and mayo as well as pickles but I like mine with just the lettuce added, delicious.
Other Sandwiches offered include, a regular as well as turkey Rueben, Hot Pastrami and Swiss, smoked turkey breast, Dijon chicken breast, a tuna salad sandwich and even a vegetarian selection.
Add to this their selection soups such as cream of Broccoli and a delicious French onion and a small selection of Pizza varieties and you can see that their menu is packed with a nice variety and some unique offerings. this makes them head and shoulders above all the fast food chains we are accustomed on its own but the real reason they are worth the visit is their buns.
Now we aren't talking normal buns, we aren't even talking potato styled buns. No in fact we aren't even talking about burger buns at all, I'm not even talking about their staffs buns. You see unlike Hooters the buns here fit right in your hands and have a bunch of nooks and crannies like an English muffin, not a tart.
They offer a sour dough with a very subtle flavor, in fact I wish it were just a bit stronger. This is their specialty and it is wonderful. Their Wheat bun and Dark Rye are wonderful as well but my personal favorite is their Jalapeno bun. With just a touch of Jalapeno cooked into the bread it adds just a bit of taste to most of their sandwiches without adding that heat we are used to associating with Jalapenos peppers.
Did I make you a little hungry? Their small will probably feed you if you weren't hungry yet, in fact it would probably feed an average appetite.
Were you already a little hungry? Their regular is enough to fill all but the hungriest of people. Either way it's going to take two hands to eat this.
Were you really hungry? I mean REALLY hungry? If so maybe, just maybe you can finish off their Muffuletta. Offered only in the sour dough variety their special 8" bun is going to be more than most could manage but that’s a lot of delicious food and if you get to nap afterwards you are going to love filling up on this one.
Gosh I guess you can guess what I had for lunch, Yaaaaaawnnnnn, guess if off to catch some Z's for me today. But man was it good!
