| jbhoch's Full Review: Wrigley Field |
Wow! There is a legendary quality about Wrigley Field. Tucked into a bustling neighborhood north of Chicago's Loop and ringed by townhouses with bleachers peering over the outfield wall, a visit to Wrigley not only validates all of those legends, but cannot fail to dazzle.
As you get off the El and walk the few blocks from the station to the ballpark, the buzz builds with sidewalk vendors, fathers and sons, overflowing bars and street entertainment. Suddenly, the stadium appears before you. Not a stunning piece of architecture, but that becomes unimportant. (You may well scratch your head, as it's a Wednesday afternoon -- don't these people work?). Pick up your ticket and head inside. Amenities are few, the concourses are rather drab and dingy. But that isn't really the point. A short walk up the stairs into the seating area takes your breath away -- it's all there, the lush green field, the outfield wall, the townhouse bleacher seats and the skyscrapers of the Loop in the background. It will take your breath away!
Before settling in, head back out onto the concourse and grab a Chicago style hotdog with all the fixings. Of course, hot dogs always taste better at the ballpark, but there is something amazing about these dogs.
Settle back in your seat and watch the game. As you watch the action and absorb the aura of the ballpark, it becomes clear why baseball was considered the national pasttime. Only Fenway comes close to capturing the magic of baseball. (And I am not a baseball fan.) You'll feel the rush ripple over the crowd as Sammy Sosa steps up to the plate. The inevitable home run and the crowd's response will knock your socks off.
After the game, join the celebration at the bars outside or slowly stroll through the reveling crowds back to the El.
Bottom line -- go to a game. Even if you're not a true baseball fan -- this is a can't miss!
